Blimey, other people's PhDs are so complcated; I think we forget how indepth our stuff is much of the time. It sounds alright to me, but I'm in a completely different area, so maybe someone like Sneaks who, I think, has more of a clue about your kind of work.

Good luck, all sounds very inventive. Here, ahve th last of the turkey, it's been curried to oblivion, so don't worry about salmonella... (turkey)

Hi Scaredgirl, your supervisor sounds like a right a******e and I can only second what has already been said here, and send you my good vibes for Friday. I'm sure some science people will be able shed light on the publications/viva situation.

In my experience, idiots who treat people the way your supervisor is treating you have some issue with insecurity/can't handle some situation in their lives, so they like to make themselves feel big in the only way they know how - and that means picking on someone who they think won'tf/can't ight back. You'll be free soon, and one day all this noesense will be a distant memory. Also, don't worry too much about passing, I know loads of thick people with PhDs, so I'm sure you'll be alright! Sorry to all the thick people with PhDs, no offence meant...

What did you want to be when you were little?

It's all coming back to me now! I wanted to be Margot Fontayn, right up until I was 9 or 10 years old when I defected from my dance classes to a theatre group. And my teacher thought I would too, she adored me and used to call me the little fairy under the toad stool. I had various dance flirtations, including clog dancing, for which my folks had a pair of bright red duck toed Lancashire clogs hand made for me. One day, I will, I will, I will! I will dance Swan lake and wear a feathery fascinator glued to the sides of my face, Really though, being a professional dancer is tough on the old bones etc, so probably better that I didn't.I do still dane though, and have some dance inspired outfits.

I say yes you can, I've seen instructions for referencing personal communications in my travels around academia somewhwere, although, I can't remember where now. Sounds like you're making a good development.

I'll put some of my marking in the post for you: I'm sure that's one dream that will almost certainly come true one day, any way.

post christmas marking mountain :(

Yes I hve more to do than I care to bring into my consciousness: I'm marking them while stting on the sofa, half watching TV and recovering from a blistering cold.

However, So You Think You Can Dance has come to the UK and is on BBC1! Right now, so am taking a break; I nearlyy wept with emotion a few minutes ago..

Good luck people!

Hmmm well, I'm going by my own experience really, and teasing you too, it was a cheap and easy gag. As a PhD I am nothing like as well maintaned as I used to be - when I worked with other people all day deoderant was a must, but, to be honest, most days I forget, even when I'm teaching. I do bathe/shower every day though, so I figure I can't need it that much.

I guess men get this sort of thing at Christmas, like we get chocs and bubble bath.

Hello! Good to hear you're all in such fine spirits this New Year's Day. I am in the mood to sweep away the old, and totally clear out and re-vamp my flat; however, I am, unfortunately, paralysed with the worst cold of my life and have been more or less welded to the sofa, or bed, for the last four days. I got excited about doing some marking earlier! PPPhhhhhhAAAAAAhhhhhH! At least it's contact with the outside world, and is stimulating - I felt like a fully functioning human, if only for a short time. A thrilling trip to Tescos (no irony there) yesterday wiped me out completely last night, so adventures are off limits for the time being. But I am making plans... and things are changing around here. It does feel different doesn't it? Or is that just me?

Old Woman you are far from alone, many of us here are mature.

Wally, that is absolutely classic New Year behaviour; I am sooo jealous.

A lesson to you all for the New Year: wear a warm coat at all times in the nasty weather; I wore my waist length funnel neck puffa thingy on a fashion whim and froze my extremity off, hence the severity of the viral attack and subsequent welding to furniture.

HAPPY NEW YEAR everybody: I wish you all the best for the coming year; I wish all your hurdles be easy crossings; your vivas be a pleasant breeze; your post - doc applications successful; your teaching a doddle; your supervisory relationships a dream; your publications top league; your motivation to be electrifying and dazzling; and I wish you happiness and love in this bright, shiny new decade!8-)

AAAAaaaawwww Someone, you shouldn't be working tonight! It's NYE. I too am home alone, I have an horrific cold: dizzy, achey, runny, and more or less unable to articulate myelf via speech, so I'm stayng in warching Harry Potter, sleeping and drnking whiskey and lemon. Good luck with the writing up Someone, how very dedicated of you, here's a prezzie: (gift)
