I reckon I've got the most essays to mark over the holidays: 140, bleeeuuuurrrrrggghhhh. And I've just discovered that consuming Rose may take the edge of it, but doesn't make the process any quicker! Maybe some more hardcore substances will do it...

Hey Wally, if only there were mistletoe smilies eh!

I too am a smiths fan, although not obsessively so. Bowie is more the man for me, ever since a very young age - kind of showing my age, although liking him was a bit retro then too.

How many undergraduate essays can a PhD student mark on the trott before their head blows off?
Avatar for Eska

I just had one that wrote in text messaging 'u' for 'you' etc, I think Ali G might have written it. They used this crazy giant multi coloured font for the word count info. It may just pass on entertainment value alone...

Hey Wally, thank you sooooo much! That's great. I can't believe you haven't had any marking to do. Yeah, I usually enjoy, but the volume I have to be getting on with is collosal, so that kind takes the joy out of it. I enjoyed the first 14, which I completed in 2 days, so I reckon 7 is about right, but I'll be going for much more, I think. Unless I do it on Christmas day too...

I meant how many per day if you keep going for a number of days - not sure f that was clear int he above. Must go and get my beauty sleep now. The most I have managed is 8 in a day, they tend to start blurring into one and I loose focus after that. Any think it's possible to just keep pushing through?

Right, I'm doing one of these quiz thingies. I'm trying to get through my marking without turning into a gibbering wreck, so I have compiled this sophisticated and thorough population research template which will fathom the the effects of marking pressure on PG students. I'm sure all you psychologist will be impressed.

So! My question is: How many undergraduate essays can a PhD student mark on the trott and in a sustained manner, per day, and over a number of days, before their head blows off? (Please bear in mind Christmas distractions also).

Hi LilMiss, oooooooowwwwwhhhww bleeuuurghgh, that's really rough of them to have pulled that on you, just before Christmas too . All I can do is wish you luck, I'm nowhere near your stage yet, so can't advise - but you just made me feel lucky to only have marking to worry about. I'm sure someone around here will be able to advise you soon.

I love the fact that we are a free thinking, free speaking, anonymous university all of our own, floating in cyber space like beautiful seahorses in the undisovered orange coral reef of academia that PGF is. We are the forum uni!

Hi Cobweb, not hiding under the tree, just cowering under the prospective weight of the 80ish essays it look like I'll be marking between new year office opening and the start of teaching, due to various hiccups: that's about 2 weeks to mark 80 of 'em, and the usual teaching stuff! Fandabbydozy, dontcha just love teaching in HE.

I've been really busy socialising, marking, swimming getting my phone fixed, in addition to general panic about marking, non action in the PhD department and fiscal matters - I did start a decadently moany thread, but only two people responded. I have no tree yet, the decs will go up this weekend, but here, have a mince pie anyhow

Stressed, congratulations on your up-grade, that's brilliant.
(mince) my smilie will only go here, must be working to rule.

Why are there so many annoying people around? One of my teaching universitites seems to be populated by an innordinate mount of people with half baked, opinionated views on life, the world, the universe and everything, and who don't seem to realise that there is a whole world out there, outside of there little orbits. Sometimes it amazes that such woolly thinking and narrow horizons can thrive in education, it's striking how different universities and departments can be.

And if a certain someone I work with doesn't stop banging on about themselves and asserting their (perceived) superiority in a very loud voice at every, every, every bloody opportunity I'll scream... pass the mince pies - ooohhh, I make fabulous mince pies you know, mine won an AHRC pie making competition don't you know.... arrrgghh other places I've worked see through things more, take the mickey more, but it seems that transparent self promotion, even when in the company of ones peers goes unnoticed at this particular joint. Also, I seem to be really popular with the management there, which is worrying, considering the self promoting woolly heads who appear to be getting on.

There are also some wonderful people in the department, so it's not like this is a serious problem or anything, the woolly thinking and conceit just amazes me, that's all, and I wanted to share. Does anyone else see this around them?

Here's a snowman: I made it with my own hands from pure Himalayan snow, don't you know, and it won a prestigious ice sculpting award, don't you know. (snowman)
