Over qualified and under qualified- but not qualified
E

Thanks for your words of advice Hypothesis and catalinbond.

Yes, I looked into the pros and cons of either going for a phd or psyD before I finished my masters. After being dissuaded by my then undergraduate supervisor in going for DClinPsy degree, my now masters supervisor has dissuaded me from a Phd! I’ve decided to try for a DClinPsy- even knowing how competitive it is, I’m prepared to stick it out to get there!

Over qualified and under qualified- but not qualified

I'm beginning to think that studying psychology has been a complete waste of time! I've been unsuccessful in finding work in psychology related for the past few months, even though I have relevant experience. I know its competitive out there, but a friend who has no experience found related work last month. Although I'm happy for her, I feel that I walked into this study area blind.

Ar'nt you supposed to feel that the worlds your oyster once you've completed a qualification? I just feel exhausted! and losing motivation.

Today I naively walked into my local job centre with my MSc, work experience, and 'other skills' feeling hopeful that I might just find any job at all, printed off at least twenty potential positions only to be told that they were either looking for a school leaver (so they could get away with paying minimum wage) or that it's been reserved for some kind of scheme for young offenders/ mothers returning to work/ etc...- no disrespect to them, I think those schemes are great- but I need a job and I don't seem to be suitably qualified for anything at the moment...

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Masters grades: what are they looking for?
E

I was wondering the same thing. When I begun mt masters one of my tutors told me that it does'nt really matter what you get, but when I was filling out an application form the other day they asked for the grade (?)

I think its only important if you know that its relevant for the next step that you're headed towards. Is it very competitive, is there a cut off point, is the institution or work place you're looking at really mindful of that stuff?

To be honest with you, I think most of these places look at a lot more than a person just having a masters and the grade attached- it's the over package that you have to offer, so I would'nt put too much emphasis on this alone

Discourse Analysis: Focus groups and how to present findings (?)

Hi, thanks Dr!

I've had my head buried deep in the books for the past few weeks! I eventually found a few other good sources, but I'll check this one out too.

Sorry, I have to where these glasses- I'm temporarily blinded by the rush of response

Discourse Analysis: Focus groups and how to present findings (?)

When looking at the development of the discursive object in Focauldian discourse analysis do we look at the language of a focus group as a collective, as if coming from one school of thought (ie) a group of opera singers or do we break this down by individual and look for the development of the discursive object by each focus group participant?

Also, any tips on how to tackle the presentation of findings for focauldian discourse analysis? alot of the literature I've found out there seems to be quite vague. I'd really appreciate any input or sources of examples anyone could offer me,

thanks, Ez.

Funding for a msc any ideas please??
E

Hi, a few people I know, including myself, got funding from their local banks, so it might be an idea to approach them- they might be able to offer you a career development loan- however, paying back the loan comes with interest charges too. Some of the people who did it said they might as well have worked for a while to save up before hand- so it all depends on how desperate you are to begin your course! Hope this helps.
