If you've got any more views on how dental charges affect your life as a PhD student or the best way for a PhD student to blow-out then why not write a short piece for our PhD life section. That way others can benefit from your experiences and you could win a $50 Amazon voucher. See this thread for details.

If you've got time to waste reading this thread then you've got plenty of time for our PhD writing competition.

We're expanding the 'PhD Life' section of FindAPhD and we want the experiences of current and former PhD students to fill it. If you're looking for a distraction from a morning in the archives or an afternoon counting red eyed flies then why not jot down some of your PhD experiences for the benefit of those who'd like to follow in your footsteps.

We're after interesting, informative and/or humorous pieces of between 250 and 1000 words. There's a £15 Amazon voucher for any that we publish on the site and a £50 Amazon voucher for the best one. All the decisions are down to us and our decision will be final. Articles must be all you own work and must not be published elsewhere.

Dear Dev

You can show your gratitude even more by writing a short piece for our PhD life section. That way others can benefit from your experiences and you could win a £50 Amazon voucher (see this thread).

Pick your own topic - How to get an ORS, My first week at a UK university, Unexpected costs of UK study, whatever you think would most help or entertain people visiting FindAPhD.

Good luck with your PhD.

I'm afraid we're not sure what you mean by DA course. What kind of First Year student are you (ie which degree are you curently doing?).

A very good resource for information on Linguistics (including PhDs) is www.linguistlist.org

'A Women's Guide To Doctoral Studies' by Diana Leonard is aimed at women pursuing (or want to pursue) a PhD in the Arts, Humanities or Social Sciences. Published by Open University Press in the UK - ISBN 0335202527. Is that what you were after or did you want a book about Women with a PhD - it would be a very big book if it existed, there are a lot of them.

PhD in England

You usually need to look for accomodation yourself. Although most universities have a limited amount of their own accommodation on offer it is generally no cheaper than private digs. Most PhD programmes are 3 years however there are more and more 4 year programmes becoming established which offer an increased taught element.
