help with Non-Funded PhDs?

It depends where you are from, what the subject is and where you are studting. The first person to ask about internal and subject specific scholarships is the project supervisor.

In your first three months you'll be spending your time finding your feet. Don't expect to understand everything straight away. You should be learning techniques and beginning to pick up a background knowledge of the work surrounding your project.

I'm afraid you're nowhere near the record - see here for the current record holder. Curiously although it contains over 200 messages, it contains no more useful information than your own thread here.

DJW, your need for closure is not uncommon. But closure has its consequences - it will be as if this thread never happened - that's nearly 5 months of your life erased. Pick your poison.

Equivalance
Avatar for FindAPhD

I'm not entirely sure what you mean. Even UK students need to have a qualification in English Language in order to be accepted at a British University. In the UK this is usually a GCSE in English, which is taken at the age of 16. It may be that you have a similar qualification from your home country.

See our PhDs Explained section for links and information on 'equivalence'.

Thesis

Being asked to enroll for a postgraduate diploma sounds unusual. I suggest you find out exactly what you are enrolling for and what funding you may or may not receive. It is not very common for students with a 2(ii) to be offered a PhD course, without first having completed a masters degree (eg MA or MSc). Even after this many PhD students are asked to enroll for an MPhil degree rather than a PhD - after 12-18 months they can then transfer their registration to a PhD if they are considered good enough. This helps the universities keep their drop-out rates low and means that those who would normally have dropped out have the opportunity to finish with an MPhil degree instead of nothing (so everybody's happy(ish)).

PhD working week
Avatar for FindAPhD

During the time when your research is based within the industrial location you will probably be expected to work the same hours as other employees, plus any extra that may be required. Whilst based in a university your hours will be a bit more flexible (but no shorter). It depends on your supervisor, but it is unlikely you'd be allowed every Friday afternoon off if you work late the rest of the week - but if you occasionally need to leave early or start late their should be little problem.

Have a look in our Funding and PhDs explained sections on this site. You should have little problem finding a number of studentships in cell signalling. Speak to your course tutors and particularly you final year project supervisor.

Why my query is deleted?
Avatar for FindAPhD

We don't delete threads very often. Occasionally they get moved into the "General" section if they are questions such as "Can anybody help me find a PhD in maths". The current page only shows the last 20 threads for this category, perhaps yours have dropped off? Try selecting "40 threads" from the top right menu.

Too late for a Masters course?

If you find a course you are really interested in, try ringing up the course administrator directly - you never know, it may not be too late, or they may have had a cancellation.

2:2 plus MSc

You do fit the eligibility criteria, but may find it more difficult than somebody with a better first degree. Having said that your lab experience should be a bonus. If you want to start this year, then things may not be so easy, but there are still studentships available.

There's quite a few threads about this, try searching the forum for things like 2i, 2ii, eligibility, criteria or MSc.
