Day 7 Report:
So, I finished my field notes today, but was unable to do anything related to my 2nd goal. It didn't help that I started the day with a nasty headache from a bit too much red wine last night! Yikes.
Thanks for the interest Lara - my research broadly looks at the globalization of health care, looking specifically at the context of Argentina.
I'm glad you're taking some hours off! Even JB says you have to take a day to rest! Plus it sounds like you've been under a lot of stress lately - and a night off is well deserved!
Hope you have a good one - on to Week 2!
Hello Anthropologa!
Well done finishing your field notes!
wow your research sounds interesting.
hehe JB says that indeed! well in the end, i didnt take time out to watch a film. BUT i did take an hour break to watch my favourite tv show (supernatural).
I hadn't finished my aims for today, so felt too guilty to take any time off.
I finally finished aim number 1! been at it for days!
did about 900 words, made the gigantic table of most of my data, triple checked it, made another figure and calculations.
i am way too sleepy to do aim number 2, so will have to do that tommorow.
thanks for keeping me company this week ! you're a star
see you tommororow!
p.s thanks for the kind words regarding i deserve a night off
Day 8: Happy Monday All! (ok, yes - I am forcing myself to be awake!)
So, I was flipping through my stained and battered copy of WYDin15 and I reviewed the section in which she writes about making sure you goals are manageable and realistic.
This is something I really have a problem with! I get so concerned with what I'm supposed to do for the day, that I set my bar too high (waaaay too many things), and as you can see from my last few posts, I consistently fall short. This ongoing cycle of shortcomings doesn't work for me either. The question I have, how do I strike a balance between pushing myself to work harder and maintaining expectations that I can achieve successfully?
Today my only Writing Goal is:
Write 1 field note entry
I've got a killer day ahead, so lets see if I can complete this successfully!
Hello Anthropolaga,
seems like we both logged on in here around the same time.
i got up late today.oooops, i was really tired from the past two days.
I totally get what you mean. you want to set aims that are actually achievable so once you achieved them you get a sense of accomplishment, but you also want to set the bar just a little higher to push yourself.
its a delicate balance, which i have no idea how to figure out.
you're not the only one, i was working on one of my aims for the past 5 days!! had no idea it was going to take that long, so sometimes things take longer than you anticipate.
for me personally. i set the aims i would like to achieve. and if i achieve them, then i can reward myself with taking a couple of hours off and watching a dvd film. IF i dont achieve them, but still have done the best of my ability, that i physically could have achieved that day, then that is still an accomplishment.
like JB says, every day is more important than how much time you spend or how many pages you produce or the quality. its the EVERYDAY part, doing SOMETHING rather than absolutely nothing that totally counts.
so the fact that you are trying to do something everyday on your writing, bodes VERY well !! and will dramatically increase the odds of you finishing.
i think the point is, set your aims, just slightly higher, BUT dont berate yourself if you dont achieve them. thats the important thing, dont be hard on yourself IF you dont achieve them. kinda look at the glass half full sort of thing
anyone else up burning the midnight oil?
well i took a massive break today, only worked about half an hour and then what was only meant to be a couple of hours break , ended up becoming a massive break lasting the whole day! in addition taking a nap in the afternoon! i guess working for the past 7 days without any proper breaks took its toll.
so i am working late now in order to achieve aim number 1.
earlier on i was having an anxiety attack about my thesis, and came across this nice little website link full of helpful hints.
http://ask.metafilter.com/33004/thesis-writers-block
reading that made me feel better, and gave me the motivation to carry on
how are you doing Anthropolaga?
and the rest of the A-team? how you all doing?
tommorow an update from everyone is required! hehe i thought i would be abit bossy there
I am doing the 15mins on and 2min off tactic. to get through the discussion section. so I will use the 2 min break to catch up on the previous messages in this thread. you all are an inspiration for me to carry on working. reading your accomplishments are great motivators for me!
check out this article about "structured procrastination" makes alot of sense!

Hey Lara:
I'm up burning the oil - although its not even midnight here in Buenos Aires yet, so I guess it doesn't quiet count.
I'm off to do my field notes!
Thanks for the links - I'll check them out on my next break and update my progress when I'm all done for today.
Also - does anyone else use "Remember the Milk" for managing your tasks? I just discovered it - and love the feature that brings up my to-do list in my gmail. Anything that links my to-do list to my email habit is a plus in my book.
Hey. . . my eyes are drooping shut . . . feels like a long day. Up at 7, busy busy busy, to bed by 1. I finished my goal tonight (!) and a reward, I'm going to pass out right. . . about. . . now.
See you in the am.
Anthropologa, well done on achieving your aim!! proud of you
I can't imagine it was easy for you, being up so early! so good on ya for ploughing through.

well i finished my aim number 1 last night, did 1,500 words for my discussion. but then once i finished it, I realised there were some interesting bits from an earlier draft. i was too tired last night to include the "extra stuff" so i will just do it now.
i will set my egg timer for 45 minutes and i will finish it and then log back in to set my aims for today.

how is everyone else doing? what are your aims for today?
