My first three months have been writting the literature review. So i have gone in as close to 9 as i can manage (normally 10 though!). Then I write a few paragraphs, read some more, write a bit, then have lunch. Then start to feel tired and bored, so I read the news/ sports on the internet, then find a few things to read the next day then sort them in order, then go home. I probably do about 5 hours a day max
I too started my PhD in October and have been working pretty much office hours. I haven't been doing extra reading at home though I would say concentrate on having a life, at least in the first year, if you work crazy hours you'll never last the 3 years. It's important to do fun things and you need to be able to switch off when not at work in order to go the distance!
