Hmmm, I'm really moved by everyone's comments and suggestions. But really there ought to be more chances for PhD holders out there. Is there something we are not doing right? Or should we come together to create our own jobs? And yes, we need work experiences... I really wish us all the very best. Addyberry
hi everyone
I've just had a look at "working holiday" :-) thanks MeaninginLife! At first glance it looks like it is for people who want to travel and get by with having some paid income--those in gap year etc. Looks tempting though. But I haven't seen one that appeals to me. Yet.
So far it has been positive since we started this thread. We can always encourage each other. Why not.
Oh yes, a few people who responded have had invites for interview, whether it was for a phd or job. So fingers crossed!

To get "Working holiday visa" may help one to secure a job like teaching foreign language.
It is better than remain jobless while you are allowed to explore a country for a year.
Meanwhile, you may try to publish some papers such that your resume looks better.
Most importantly, it is easier to find a job when you are "already employed".
hi meaninginlife, can you been on a working holiday? can you share your experience with us? Must have been very enriching.
Working holidays aside, I got a rejection email today, I am ok with it. I was disappointed with my supervisor. I sent him the whole thesis more than 2 weeks ago, and now he's asking for it again. If he had bothered to look at it 2 weeks ago, would have really been great. My submission date has been pushed from October last year to March, to April to May and now July. I don't know what to believe anymore. Still I have to plod on, say OK THANK YOU and do again what he has said. I wish I could scream at him "you have let me down (again)" but I can't. Just too bad.
Hanging in there.
I hope other people have better news, if you do, please do post! it wil lift me up.
thanks

Sorry, I don't have any experience on working holiday.
My supervisor is equally disappointing.
This kind of supervisor should learn a lesson, one day.
Below is a website which could be useful...
Hi Satchi, hope you are well. I had a rejection y'day again. I went all the way to the University to attend interview 6 hrs travelling...the irony is as soon as I reached home back from interview, a rejection email was waiting for me....that was too quick. Don't even feel like unpacking my stuff. the overnight stay & travel was tiring & the rejection letter was too sad to think of now. In a way I am happy that I do not have to relocate leaving my family but not happy either by the series of rejections! I don't think I will ever be financially independent...what a shame.
hi Swetchha
thanks for posting. I'm so sorry about the job! Yes the email was really quick, you didn't even have any time to recover from the travel! I think you will feel better as today goes by, and then tomorrow, and the day after.
For my last interview, my bf took leave from work, we drove together about 5+ hrs on the way there, and 7+ hrs on the way back because we missed one turn (satnav and road looked misleading!), it was comfortable because I didn't travel alone, and we were laughing and joking in the car. For that interview the rejection email came one week later. I am guessing they were waiting for the chosen applicant to sign some papers?
I haven't made any job applications last week (and this week I haven't started). We really do need time to unwind and recover, and then, let's start over.
I'll always be here. Job or not.

hi janineG, sorry to hear about the Aberdeen studentship. I'm sure something else will come up for you to apply. I'm also waiting for one more reply (job app). After this week, if I haven't heard, then I know I haven't been shortlisted. There hasn't been anything else on jobs.ac. that I can apply for at this moment.
How long has it been since you applied to Dundee and Glasgow? What you can do is call up their HR people and ask them about it. Remember to quote the reference number and name of Institute, project or supervisor.

Thanks Satchi, yes slowly recovering now. I am thinking of applying from next week onward again. But, the positive thing at the moment is I have been appointed a 'Visiting Research Fellow' in my own Uni and glad that it will save me for a year. By the time, I plan to publish few articles. I will also have some more experience. The voluntary role doing in one organisation is going well too. I have my articles getting published in their magazine as well as in the website. All we can do is hope for the best !!
