"Call me a softy but I think some of you people are being extremely harsh on this guy! So you disagree with the way he has phrased his distress. Fine, state that but some of you really do seem to have gone over the top." (Lady P)
I quite agree - some posts of this forum have, of late, become a little harsh to say the least. Just because someone is feeling crap doesn't mean people have to slag him/her off about it.
Well considering Terik didn't post on this thread again since July 2005, he/she either topped themselves, or didn't really mean it or managed to get a Phd place.
Wanting to kill yourself because you cannot get a Phd just indicates underlying problems. We can't always have everything the way we want, thats life and before anyone starts, I speak from experience. You learn from things that happen and then move on. I would have suggested counseling.

I agree with you as regards sympathy by some ofthe forum users, some time ago I asked for info on Black PhD students- you know just a innocent request and the whole thread turned nasty i was totally shocked . Like you I am very wary to use this forum agin as I feel some of the users are unsympathetic, rude or just plain nasty.
Whether the individual who posted this thread is fooling around or not, suicidal thoughts should be taken seriously
So Jenny, that's not a very nice way of continuing the original debate through the back door.
It's hypocritical, actually. You had nothing to say in the original debate and now you try to post this irrelevant comment weeks later.
It doesn't seem like you've learned anything at all..

obviously your conscious is troubling you - if you believe you were one of the negative people featured in the post. The good outcome from the whole incident is that I received a lot of fantastic positive comments from individuals ( black, asian and white) offline from this forum.
All were sympaethetic and many felt those who misinterpreted or were derogatory to me and other forum users were were utter tossers !!
In fact i think you should leave the forum site as many thought your comments were non sensical or irrelevant- all I know is that YOU have a chip on your shoulder
You may have commented on it, but you didn't answer my question, that is all I wanted - not stupid insulting comments.
My question was for important information gathering but turned into a race thread- that is why I am angry - so called Phd intellectuals twisting things
If you checked your thread you will see that my comments were not insulting, but in line with the thread..

04 December 2006 22:51 I have just seen this thread.. I am doing a PhD in microbiology and my supervisor is Asian, and the institute where I am doing my research is teeming with various nationalities. When I was doing my undergrad degree (in London) I had 2 asian lecturers, 1 black lecturer and there were various other nationalities.. Obviously I don't know if they have come up against racism, but the world of science doesnt seem to be affected by nationality/race/creed from what I have seen of it.
