That was exactly my experience with my supervisor, which made me got six months of major corrections. Both internal and external examiners emphasised that I articulated well and I understood my thesis. Therefore you passed your viva. However, your thesis still needs some significant changes of six months, according to the chairperson. Looking at those corrections report received I realised, it was the lack of adequate supervision.
