PhDs for asylum seekers

J

Nowt wrong with the Nederlands, but sometimes it's necessary to move abroad to do the specialism that you want to do. Many people in my field of plant science go to the Netherlands cos it's the leader in this area; similarly people may come to the UK or US for another subject.

G

Juno...why is it anti-asylum crap to suggest that someone who takes from a country should put something back? Most people call that being fair.

S

No, my post on Glasgow made reference to an asylum seeker who was knifed to death a few years ago. I think there are ongoing problems there with the locals.

S

So that's good news then?

J

Golfpro: Most European countries have signed an agreement to provide asylum for persecuted individuals, and besides which I think rich countries have an ethical obligation to provide support in extreme circumstances such as those which drive someone to seek asylum far from home. I didn't like the parochialism implicit in your argument: lots of people - not just asylum seekers - are educated in one country and then move to another. Everyone benefits from this transfer of skills in the long run.

G

There is nothing wrong with that argument, in a 6th Form politics kind of way. Of course in the real world the situation is markedly more different.

There is also nothing wrong with saying that it is only fair to put something back into one country before you look to take from another. Holland has done a lot for this person. What has he done for them in return?

I am also not entirely sure you have the courage of your convictions. Isn't saying 'First of all, make your way to Calais. Then offer favours to a lorry driver' a far more anti-asylum statement than mine? Perhaps as I am not as frequent a poster as others I represented a far softer target for your political outburst.

J

Try to be original, Golfpro. That's exactly the same argument that you've used with everyone you've disagreed with.

And the other people on the list were joking: you were being serious.

G

Not entirely sure what your point is. Also how do you know who was joking? Have you asked them?

G

Perhaps you could give me you opinion on this thread Juno.

As apparently you can tell these things was DanB being serious here or just joking?

J

Go back to work, Golfpro! If I'd known you were so sensitive I would not have said anything. I'm sorry. Better now?

S

For the record, I was joking, as was observed on the day in question.

G

Disappointing. Have the courage of your convictions. have you nothing to say re that post?

G

Sylvester how could kukusha as a Aslyum seeker in Holland possibly determine that you were joking?

S

Golfpro. It is an old redundant thread dated from July 2004. He/she hasn't posted since (that was the whole idea). Also, as a guest user they would not have received an email. I'd be amazed if they were still lurking/reading this board, especially considering the lack of response to the original thread until mine over 2 years later.

G

Ah I see. That makes it all better then. For the record 'anti-asylum seeker crap' is allowed in old redundant threads where the original poster is unlikely to read it. Didn't realise. I'll save all my right-wing statements for suchlike in future.
