It has got many features like to-do list, timesheet, milestones, file section, proofing tool, etc. I use it as it is relatively easy to use and lighter on the pocket. There are other web based project mangement softwares like basecamp, zoho, asana, podio, etc. You can check them out and choose the one best suited to your needs.

The best free project management software I have ever used is Fluxes.com. It's very simple to use, yet a powerful tool for managing daily tasks and team projects. Fluxes is installed with lots of useful features which is way better than many paid tools.
I used project management software in industry but I didn't use it for my PhD.
It seemed a bit unnecessary. I used a todo list in a notebook and that served me very well.
On a personal level I absolutely hate putting physical time deadlines on anything I do unless it is absolutely essential. It's a guaranteed way to stress myself out.
