If I would be his/her supervisor I would kick him/her out because of the level of ignorance. First of all, funding is not based on merits of the projects or people. Funding depends mostly on the profit the host institution or company expects as the result of the research. Second of all, we all know which projects or fields are more likely to be funded as compared to others since academia is not exempt from capitalist production relationships. Third of all, all projects or researchers are subject to same universal criteria for the assessment of their work. Lastly, I would appreciate self-funded projects much more than others because they reflect some kind of independency which we need in academic life.
