well done algae! You put me to shame. I haven't started the transcription yet - just been day dreaming and posting on here :$
I must run and do it NOW! its the other halfs bday tomorrow, so I am basically losing tomorrow, thus and friday to moving and an excited 26 (more like 7) year old.
Well done Algae on your paper, and Sneaks on the moving!
I'm feeling slightly better about my chapter... after a good rant, some luch and some tapping away, I've managed to finish the bit that was really getting to me. Still no where near finished, but I'm one step closer :-)
Onwards and upwards (or something to that effect!)
Anyone feeling they're spending too long on this forum at the moment? Just can't get out of the (tree)(turkey)(mince)(snowman) feeling. Anyhow, my supervisor just gave me an Endnote library of relevant stuff, so I promise to have read 10 journal articles from it by Friday.
1 down at the moment.
go get the (tree) jinkim - well done for doing so much! I reckon you will wipe the floor with it tomorrow. I'm half way through an hour long interview and he's gone into a rant so must get typing! (gift)
Sneaks, I don't envy you on the moving. Glad its going well
I have thought of giving it to someone else to read, but my problem is letting go. I don't like anyone seeing things that are half finished. Not because I am worried about them stealing stuff, but I'm a perfectionist. Got to get past that one though, it is somewhat hamstringing me :(
Managed to get my intro and conclusions done. Also ended up splitting the chapter into two, and now it flows much better. Now to the next task!
sounds like you have been very productive bluebird! You must get past the perfectionist thing though. I know someone who finished their thesis about 2 years ago now and STILL hasn't submitted because he is tweaking things and his supervisor is going crazy with it. It was completely finished but he just won't let go.
Today
- face the bitter cold and take dog for a walk
- transcribe the remaining interiews (2 and a half) - COME ON SNEAKS YOU CAN DO THIS!! - seems to be a mental block like the little devil on my shoulder telling me NOT to finish the transcriptions.
Thanks Sneaks, I am working on the perfectionist thing. I have taken to reading other peoples theses on occasion just so I can see that this IS achievable, and it doesn't need to be that perfect. I don't know that I could hold onto it for two years beyond finished though, because I am getting to the point where I just want the thing done! I also have total faith that when my supervisor says I am ready to submit, that I will be. I am very lucky with my supervision team.
Anyway, tonight I need to
- complete one full section (that I have been working on for weeks :$ )
- reorganise everything I have into the remaining sections
- write a summary for each section of each chapter
- proof read the chapters as they stand, and then send them to my supervisor! *gasp*
I have a review meeting on Friday am, so am getting a wee bit nervous about that.
Hope you have a productive day :) And if I can let go of my lit section enough to send it to my supervisor, I am sure you can get the transcriptions done.
I have walked the dog - in the snow! (snowman)(snowman)(snowman)(snowman)(snowman)
Now for a nice big cup of tea and onwards - to the transcriptions!
omg, I have done 1 transcription :-( I need to finish the other one before 4 really. and then i have the half finished one, but I need the house empty for that as the sound quality on the interviewees side is appalling, whereas my side of it is REALLY LOUD, so i have to turn it up super loud to hear her bits and then my voice is booming round the house in the embarrassing squeaky way! Oh well, I'll try with this last but one one!
woo done the other transcription. Now going to go and write a list of things i don't want to be put in the removals van.
I've just managed to get 3 1/2 chapters back from my co-sup yesterday; finally he's mostly happy with the structure and what I've written. Its taken 4 drafts of my lit review and its finally right! (given over to minor tweaking) I'm trying to get it done whilst everyone else is in the group meeting.
I'm going through my other 2 1/2 chapters with my co-sup this afternoon so fingers crossed he likes these as well. If he does then I'm mostly finished on full draft. Could be an issue though I have a mild hangover, didn't get a lot of sleep last night as I went out with friends that haven't seen me since the last time I came up to visit in October and I have to get a train home at 4pm.
Any ideas to get me motivated for the afternoon to come? I'm already on the lucozade.:p
ah everyone seems so productive! I have moved house and everything is everwhere. Most of the big furniture is coming up today. So I was going to spend ANOTHER day sitting around watching films, but have decided to do some work. The interviews I have been struggling to analyse thematically, I now have to analyse them a separate way so going to do at least 2 today - that's the aim!
I'm back for the new year with a sense of panic. I have A LOT of non-PhD work to do and A LOT of PhD work I told myself I would get done before xmas but it just didn't happen.
I want a paper written up by the end of january though so my main PhD aims for today are
- do one piece of qual analysis
- analyse the qual data (now quant) data using a lovely little stats thing that will come to me once I have had a look through my stats book (I hope!)
In the mean time I am writing a presentation and preparing for a meeting tomorrow for non-PhD things :-s
With only six months to go I am really annoyed with having to do so much non-PhD work!
