Morning everyone.
Today my first goal is to work on a particular analysis section. Progress on this chapter is so slow, its really getting me down. I want to get to a point where I actually feel like it's going somewhere.
Goal 2- attend meeting with research group (unless I'm on a roll with my analysis as the meeting isn't compulsory, but I doubt I will be!).
Goal 3- Do more work on either analysis or literature section.
well I went on a course last week but obviously that only introduces SEM - I should probably go on another course to get the more advanced stuff but have not got the time or money to do so.
I start a new job today - my supervisor is getting me to do RA work 3 days a week. I stupidly thought 'its probably realistically only 2 days work, so I can get paid to do my PhD on the 3rd day' she's just emailed me a list of work she wants me doing from today until friday. IT IS NOT 2 days, more like 6 weeks worth of work in 3 days ARGH!
So no PhD work for me today. :-(
Hubs is also trying to get an applicatoin form ready for promotion boards, and he's getting me to do most of it, so also have to find time to work on that before tonight, as it needs to be handed in for tomorrow. STRESSFUL!
Sounds like we're all working slowly today. Apart from Sneaks, who will have to run to keep up, it sounds like! Yikes!
A new starter PhD student is sitting next to me today (we hot-desk so it can be different people every day) and he's the noisiest typer I've ever heard (thump those keys, go on!) And he mutters to himself while he works. Grrrr!
I have achieved goals 1 and 2, so am now moving on to goal 3.

sounds like a nightmare, there's a new PhD girl in my office and she will not shut up. YOu daren't mention anything to any of the other people in there (most of them are actually postdocs so don't want to be disturbed) because she'll jump on it and run with an entire conversation. e.g. Me: "the printer's out of toner, is it xxx we go to for those?" Her: "I had a printer once, it was really funny because......." ARGH!
Have you got your heating sorted yet?
It's windy and raining and there is also a remote possibility that the plumber might call around today (another leak) so I am staying put rather than cycling to uni to meet with my research group.
My goal is to get the document I'm working on up to 6,000 words, ideally by mid afternoon.
Oh dear, they're replacing a load of the lights in the office and one of the workmen doing it just blew himself off the stepladder and shorted all the lights! He's fine, luckily, and the lights are back on, but now we have a whole group of workmen earnestly discussing what the problem might be and climbing up and down the stepladder to get a look. Distracting or what?!
They're supposed to be coming round tomorrow afternoon to fix my heating. Hope they do - it's getting ridiculous now, I'm coming down with a cold as well as being stiff and sore, so it's not doing me any good!
Gah, I'm not getting much work done now. I'm half way through goal three, and have 2 hours until my statistics class. Boo to all these distractions!
I have completed my goal of getting to 6000 words. 1000 words in one morning isn't bad! I'm also possibly starting to see light at the end of the tunnel.
My next goal is to organize a load of notes and pdfs of articles because I have been lax with my housekeeping recently.
1k is not bad at all! Congrats!
I've just had to send one of those horrible emails - I initially agreed to do some work, but have since got really busy and have had to turn it down (its work for a prof) so I feel a bit embarrassed, but my sup knows the prof and will kill me if she finds out I've taken it on!
I'm finding it very ahrd to keep the temp up in my office ,I have 2 cats and a dog, the door closed and slippers on etc. but the heat keeps dropping (even with the heating on!)
Morning all.
My first goal is to get 500 words written on my analysis section. I am trying to ignore the workman who is in my living room putting up wallpaper, and the fact that he turned up 45 minutes early at 7.15 (who turns up for work at 7.15 at someone's house!?) and saw me naked through the kitchen window.
Right, I'm doing RA work again today, so my first goal it work out which data set to use and start adding the latest data to it.
That email I sent yesterday - was a bit weird in the end. Basically this person asked me to do some work. This person knows my sup very well. But my sup said I shouldn't do it as am so busy at the mo (and apparently this other person likes to take advantage if you let them). So I wrote a polite email saying that I was so busy and that sup wouldn't want me taking on extra work. At which point, I get a reply that says basically, "that's a shame becasue i was sorting out a contract for you for another matter" so I'm thinking, "oh no, i've lost out on a job opportunity!" But when I thought about it, I've only met them once for about 30 mins. They have NO idea if I'm employed, or what kind of work I'm looking for, or that I can do, whether I even want a job, and how much pay I'll be expecting, so all in all I'm inclined to think of it as a catty comment designed to make me feel rubbish. Any thoughts?
Hmm Sneaks, that is odd and sounds quite unprofessional of them (I suspect its some kind of catty comment).
My first goal is done. My next goal is to write another 500 words and to hit 3500.
Agreed, that does sound catty and suspiciously likely to be untrue!
And 7.15 is ridiculously early for workmen to be turning up - and I feel your pain about being spotted through the window!!
My first goal of the day has been done - had meeting with potential hosts of my research study. And they agreed to everything I wanted and are really enthusiastic about being my subjects, and were even happy if I went ahead and asked another organisation as well. Yay! I feel like I actually have some viable research to do now! (Thanks Sneaks for the advice about this a few weeks ago!)
Goal 2 - tidy the living room before the plumbers turn up to fix my heating (yay again!!!)
Goal 3 - I think the plumbers will be noisy so I'll spend the time they're here organising my PDFs, deleting emails and generally tidying up all my files so I know where everything is!
Goal 4 - turn on my repaired heating and bask in glorious warmth!
ah, heating :-)
I have the heating on, but my feet clearly haven't had the memo.
I've got gas men digging up the road outside and its set off all the car alarms in my street!
Have done no work this morning due to being rubbish and dodgy external hard drive not working.
I'm glad that you're finally getting your heating sorted!
the one good thing about having workmen in today is that I couldn't use the kitchen (also wallpapering in there) so I went out to a Thai restaurant for lunch.
I didn't get my word count on my literature section up to 3500 because I deleted a lot of stuff. However I did tackle and entire section. My next goal is to tackle one analysis section.
Bastard bastard scum landlord!!!!! I was expecting brand new radiators to be installed today, but instead they sent round a plumber from a completely different company who knew nothing about my heating having been broken for seven weeks, armed only with a hammer. AAAARRRRGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!! He did manage to bash one of the radiators into working order - great, I'll huddle round that one for the next seven weeks, shall I? Couldn't yell at him too much, it's not his fault, but I am so so so angry now! I'm giving him an hour to report back to the lettings agency about the major repair work that's needed, and then I'm going to phone them and give them hell. Bastards!!!
And breathe.
Phew, I needed that rant!
Not much chance of settling to any more work today, I fear. And tomorrow may well be spent occupying the offices of the lettings agency. Hey, we students are radical again these days, right?
