Goals one, two and four done. Supervisors were very happy with the mince pies :-) One of them started talking about applying for post-doc funding for me - I'm sure that's not connected to the provision of mince pies, he has mentioned it briefly before - but anyway, it's quite flattering that he's planning this when I'm only a short way into my second year. He is hyper-organised though!

Goal three done, and some extra stuff too. But the internal examiner I wanted to take a mince pie to has been absent all day - her office door is open and her coat's on the back of her chair, but she hasn't been there at all. Oh well, she misses out on the mince pies! Now I have to hot-foot it to the office to get my form stamped. Off to see the family tomorrow so no more real work til I'm back on Tuesday :-)

Is anyone working today? I had been planning a couple of relaxed days after presenting at a conference yesterday, but when I got home last night had am email informing me that after 1st of Feb the ESRC are terminating both sources of funding I'm planning to apply for next year after 1st of Feb. So rather than having time to relax and ages and ages to sort out the applications, I now have mountains of work to do to submit them by that deadline.

My first goal is to make a couple of small amendments to my chapter, phone the ESRC and then to email my supervisors.

Yes I am working on my thesis today, more editing! Managed to lose about 4800 words of 7000 so far but it is slow and tedious. Hoping to get some constructive feedback from my supervisor today via email. Had a very bizarre thing last night while editing the beast, it suddenly started deleting itself as if the delete button was stuck (but wasn't) and I couldn't stop it. I couldn't shut down Word as the laptop was unresponsive, arghh! Had to force a shut down of my laptop and recover a previous version. It was very freaky............my hubby saw it and was equally baffled. Just don't need such dramas at this stage.

Star-shaped, hope you get your funding sorted, what a pain just before some relaxing festivites. How did the presentation go at the conference yeasterday?

My presentation went really well, thanks! I was quite nervous but everyone was really positive about it. Now I just need to write it up as a journal paper! This was going to be my next big project over January but the grant applications might get in the way of that a bit.

I have done my first goal and have just managed to log into the Je-s system. My next goal is to get more of an idea about what the grant application will involve and to start to think it through and make notes.

I am working today, have had a little break after finishing my MSc but need to start some PhD work now for a meeting in early January. Have just printed off a pile of journal articles so will start to read through them now, want to get them all read by the end of the day.

Hi all, I have to amalgamate the discussion of two chapters into one as they are very similar. I understand that repetition can lead examiners to suggest rewriting of sections to incorporate all into one so that is why I am doing this. Also will reduce the words abit! Just a pain to do after writing it all up but better now that after a viva lol. Will probably take all day but the following goal will be editing of chapter 6.

Star-shaped, glad your presentation went well as it is very encouraging to get good feedback - well done! At least writing a journal paper over christmas is a break from the doctoral work too. I hope to be submitting by May 2011 (but have an extension agreed just in case!). Seems like I have loads of time but it will go quickly I am sure. When will you be submitting?

I am hoping to submit in July. My funding runs until September so we'll see!

Work on the introduction for my paper is going slowly. So far I have managed to edit half a section which I wrote a while ago. However inbetween writing I have got my JeS account upgraded, been in touch with the research office and arranged a date to meet with the guy I am hoping will be my mentor for a postdoc. I think I am going to leave my introduction for now and to have a look at the JeS system to get an idea of what is required for a grant application.

Goal done. And the applications are not quite as scary as I was expecting. Next I am going to have a snack and a cup of tea and try and get some more of my introduction written.

Morning all. My first goal today is to actually manage to get dressed and then to get a draft of the introduction for my journal paper finished.

Haha Star-shaped - my first goal is to get myself and three babies washed and dressed without too much drama lol. This afternoon I was supposed to work while they are in nursery but it is last minute venturing out to the shops in the snow! Will carry on editing ch 6 this evening, aim is to finish that chapter. Would like to get it all edited by christmas day otherwise I may be working on it then aswell!
