The One Goal Thread

S

I think I am actually closer to finishing my case for support than I first thought. The maximum is 6 pages and it is now 5 pages. :-) I need to fill it out but I'm goin to save it for tomorrow when I'm fresh. My next goal is to move onto the application form and fill out whatever sections of that I can manage.

well done star shaped - sounds like you're going to make that deadline :-)

S

Thanks for the encouragement! I am really starting to struggle now though. I feel like I need to work late though. My supervisor said I really need to blast it all weekend but I have to travel back to my home town for a party tomorrow which I really can't get out of. ugh.

I am going to move on to putting together the project resources so I can email them to my supervisor to check through.

S

I have done the project resources. I am really starting to flag now. I am going to move on to the application form for the Postdoc (I have been working on the small grant all day) and will just fill out whatever sections I feel like I can manage.

Good evening all!!!!

Thank you all!!!!

Morning everyone. My laptop is very, very ill at the moment. :-( I am having to use my boyfriend's. Thank god I save 2 copies of everything as I go along and work straight off a memory stick.

My goal for this morning is to try and get my case for support done. The methods section needs work so I'll start there.

B

Morning Star-Shaped.

My other half is out for a couple of hours, so I'm hoping to get a bit of work done while he's out.

Goal 1- read chapter and start editing

A

yep, back-up, back-up, back-up - I have gotten paranoid about that lately and have my stuff backup up on two USBs, my laptop desktop, my documents which I can access off any college computer and keep emailing myself docs as well.

Good luck with your methods section, Star shaped - my favourite section :-)

P

Morning everyone :)

I was MIA for a while, my health went downwards for few months, but since then, I've been quietly working on my software for several months. Now that's done, I'm doing the last leg of this marathon - writing up everything! Got about three chapters that I just need to finish off, but the rest is still yet to be done.

So two weeks into my writing up (take 2) and I'm going stir crazy already!

If you're writing up or have written up, did you have a daily goal? What was your goal? I'm trying to write 1500 words everyday but it becomes tough after a few days of writing in a row, and I'm not even sure if that is enough!

Anyway, today's goal is to type up the current chapter that I hand wrote this week (do other people still do that?).

S

Pink numbers, 1500 sounds like a lot to me! I guess my goals vary depending on my deadlines. I think I average about 1000 words a day if I try though.

I am really struggling with the methods section. I have done half of it. I WILL do the rest of it before having a break and showering!

P

I totally sympathise, I have no idea what is going to go into my method section either... do people really have a set method that they are going to use and stick to it?

I write 1500 words in the assumption that 500 of those words will be useless... so in the end, I am on the same target as you :)

S

I have drafted out the methods section (this is for a grant application, rather than my entire methods chapter!).

My next goal is to tidy up the data and ethics sections.

D

Afternoon all! I have just had a skype tutorial with my supervisor regarding lab politics. We were hoping to do some 'further' work to my PhD thesis but the NHS has blocked the lab use again. More red tape to sort out :-s Anyhow He is really pleased by my thesis progress and hopefully I won't need the further work post viva.

So I have ch 5 discussion to read and edit followed by ch 6 and 7. Just 600 words to lose, yeah.

Pink Numbers - I wrote myself small goals such as 'write the methods and results for ch 3' or 'write ch 3 discussion' rather than giving a set word count to write. This way I could just write and tidy it up later and not focus on words. Ok I ended up with 7000 over the limit but editing is easier to do than write!

Star Shaped - what are you eating or drinking as you are on a roll!! Can I have some of what your having :-)

S

Well I have had some nice coffee but I am mainly just running on adrenaline from having a strict, impending deadline. I have now redrafted and entire case for support which is ALMOST ready to send to my supervisor. However I'm not quite happy with the methods section.

I now need to get ready to go away for the evening though, damn. I will try and get it done before I leave but it may have to be tomorrow when I get back.

I'm writing a very boring account of my PhD research for non-phd stuff today, I have to 'reflect' on what I've learnt, so I have to put on my 'writing BS' hat on and just go for it.
