The One Goal Thread

finished writing the bulk of the intro section... now need to go back and fill in the gaps like refs and particular years.

Hello everyone - I'm back after ten straight days off, and I feel so much better for it. I thought I'd struggle to fill the time and keep thinking about the PhD but actually I barely thought about it at all and would have loved another week off! Oh well. Refreshed and ready for a restart now.

Hope everyone else's work is going well!

First goals of today, to do before lunch:
1.) Go swimming - DONE!
2.) Go through all the emails I've received in the last 10 days and act on anything urgent
3.) Write up new to-do list and prioritise the work for the next couple of weeks

S

Glad you had a nice break Batfink!

I am getting back into it today after taking a bit of a break. My first goal is to tidy up one section of literature.

Hi star-shaped, hope it's going okay!

I went swimming again this morning (aching but happy now, I really recommend swimming as a good way to kick-start the day!) and then to a meeting, so have only just sat down to think about this afternoon's work.

Tasks for today:
1.) Look at state of play with interviews with one study group and move this on a bit
2.) Decide how relevant a newly identified area/method is to my study
3.) Think about agenda and preparation for tomorrow's supervision meeting

S

Morning!

Yesterday wasn't too good for writing. I went to a meeting at lunch time and felt like that took up most of the day somehow. I really need to get on with things!

My first goal is to redraft one literature section.

Good morning!

Today, I will mostly be preparing for this afternoon's supervision meeting. I'm feeling like things are a little out of control and not really getting sorted properly, so I need to work out what needs doing and a strategy to achieve the things I have to achieve. April didn't seem scary but now it's May I'm feeling like time is running out! Calm, calm, calm....

S

I know the feeling... May is definately scary! I remember talking to a friend in Feb and he was saying how he thought March was scary. I'm not suite sure how it got to be May so quickly!

I have now redrafted one section. It is slow going. My goal for the afternoon is to redraft a second section.

S

I have completely hit a brick wall and haven't managed to do anything apart from panic a bit this afternoon. Rather than tearing my hair out until 5pm I'm going to have a break and head to the gym, then put in a couple of hours this evening.

A good break sounds like an excellent plan, star-shaped. Hopefully it'll all seem straightforward when you get back! Exercise does seem to lift my mood (or at the very least, thrashing about in the water when I go swimming burns off some frustration!) - hope that works for you too.

Just had my supervision meeting. My supervisors are sweethearts! I told them I was feeling anxious about my data collection and they talked it through with me and made me realise that it's all fine, I'm on track to have my data collected in very good time, and the final stages are not as daunting as I think they are. Sanity restored.

Tasks for the rest of today (what little remains):
1.) Write up notes from supervision meeting and email to supervisors
2.) Work out plan of action for between now and end of June (when I go on a summer school and then on holiday)
3.) If I'm not quite ready to go home by then, work on poster design for university showcase

Writing up the meeting notes took longer than I intended, as they kept reminding me of small jobs I needed to do! Oh well, all done now. I have half an hour til I need to leave to catch my train (unless I want to stay an extra hour) so that's just time to do my timetable. Or mess around on the internet. Hmm, I wonder which I'll end up doing...?

Working from home today so ready to crack on with things! Tasks/goals for today:

1.) Go to bank and run a few other errands in town
2.) Email pilot volunteers to remind them to complete the questionnaire
3.) Work out timetable up to end of June
4.) Design poster for university showcase
5.) If there's time left over, think about structure of journal paper I'll be writing next week

May I politely request to join this thread?

My challenge for today is;
- to finish my section on Water,
- to start my section on Agriculture,
- to pay my BT phone bill
- to not eat all my lunch by 11am (part failure so far as the crisps and apple are eaten)
- to condense all my scrappy word docs into one larger document

:p

You're very welcome to join!

Tasks 1 and 2 complete. Though somehow I'm in a really evil mood and had to hold myself back from snarling at people who got in my way in town. I am clearly not fit for human company. So back to work it is....

Welcome Hiccup!

I have just got back home after teaching from 9. I'm having a bit of a crisis. I realised I really, really hate teaching so I am wondering whether I should be looking to work in academia at all. I think I need to give it some thought and thrash things out with some fellow PhD students (and will be doing over a few pints later today!).

Anyways, my goal for today is to rewrite one literature section.

Thank you :)

I have failed on the lunch. All gone. Yum.
