The One Goal Thread

Avatar for sneaks

I have no idea how people work late. I've just had to do some work on another project, so at least that leaves me a good full day tomorrow to do PhD work and my eyes are stinging and I'm so tired. BUt strangely not tired to sit and watch tv - just for working hmmm.

Does anybody else find it hard to get back into it the next day after the day before?? I only stopped working yesterday as I felt like sand had been thrown in my eyes but now this morning it's hard to get back into the rhthym :-(.

Morning all!  Ady my problem is that I am motivated in the morning but cannot get anything done with three littlies hanging of me, arghh! Hubby has been off for two weeks leave so I thought I could get some child free time while he 'supervised' them - WRONG! He sits playing on his laptop while the bambinos fight for my attention which means I get nothing done, so disappointed and disillusioned with the last few weeks.

So I finally got an article translated from French to English which clarifies its inadequacies so I can discuss this better in the viva.  Now I have to finish reading through and post-it noting chapter 5, then chapter 6. Lets see how today goes..........(sprout)

I really can't focus if I try to work late. Especially if I've already been sat at the computer all day. 8 hours tops for me. I'm OK with most mornings though.

Right my first goal today is to get a job application ready to send off.

RIght I've already had a strange email conversation with my supervisor this morning.

I didn't get my analysis section done yesterday, so my first goal is to get that done by lunchtime, after I fill in a form.

My husband recently went on a training course about how to put together a written document (yes he already has a PhD haha), and the trainer had a phrase which apparently the entire team (well male members of) found hilarious and sniggered throughout the entire training week. The phrase was 'just bash it out' and now I find that it actually encourages me to just get on - get past the negative thoughts about how awful or difficult writing this paragraph is and 'just bash it out' haha.

After years working shift work (16 possible shifts in a fluctuating fortnightly roster!) morning or evening doesn't bother me but whenever I start, it takes me a while to get going.

Dunni, can completely relate to hubby 'minding' techniques. Do you get a list of household duties completed as well?? Constant praise is required, and I'm not talking to kiddies!! Good job translating article, here's hoping you don't have to argue against it in French in your viva:p

Star-shaped, snap re: first goal!

I'm having a hard time keeping up with everything I need to do. So many things but so little time. I don't like working late but i have a quota to meet so no choice for me I guess.. :-(

Keep on keeping on...

I don't like working late but have found myself doing that more than I wanted to over the last few months. Oh well. Once I get going I'm generally okay, but if I start the day by procrastinating that's it, I'm done for.

Just been to a mildly interesting seminar given by a visiting academic in my department, so now it's back to updating the online versions of my questionnaire. In theory, this could go live and my data collection could start as soon as I've finished this task, but in reality there might be a short delay while I wait for the organisations I'm studying to actually press start. So I'll either be crazy busy or twiddling my thumbs. Hmm.

today's lesson: don't spend 2 hours looking through dropbox and various external hardrives for a file you think may have the word 'table' somewhere in it, before checking your email - somewhere in the past, there is an organised version of yourself that made sure you kept the email!

S

I have spent all morning filling out an application form. Gah. My goal for the rest of the afternoon is to finish editing a journal paper.

No time for PhD write-up today...

nice obscure word that 'table' - I'm sure it was easy to find;-)

Yay, questionnaires all finished and ready to go. All I need now is for my two organisations to come back with the final go-ahead and I can put them live and my data collection will begin! Woo.

Now to sit around twiddling my thumbs while I wait. Hmm. Maybe I'll look at the backlog of journal alerts I've been ignoring for the last few weeks (er, months...)

S

I am now happy with my journal paper, hurray.

My final goal is to edit my CV to include in job application and to draft out a cover letter.

D

Chapter 5 read through and post-it noted. Chapter 6 to do this evening then that is all done. Worryingly I seem to have another host of questions of things that are not included in my thesis that I am worried might come up at viva. These are extra bits in the publications by my sup and I (more his slant of the research than mine) have included along with the work in my thesis......oh what to do?
