The One Goal Thread

S

I'm glad I'm not the only one working today. Ady, major restructuring sounds daunting but I agree that once you get started it isn't usually as bad as expected, and I find it quite satisfying deleting each of the comments made by my sup from a copy of the feedback as I go along! I am *supposed* to be submitting on September 1st, which means handing it in for binding this Thursday. It isn't actually in too bad a state, just really references, proof reading and a few small changes to sort out. BUT I'm applying for a grant with a deadline on 15th September which is taking up most of my time. It's likely that my hand in date will have to be pushed back by a week or so but hopefully not any longer than that.

S

OK I've got to the point with my writing where I'm not actually achieving very much. My next goal is to insert missing references into my refworks word document and to generate my bibliography (oooh).

Hello!

I'm around too... I 'gave' myself the morning off as I was feeling a bit demotivated at the mo. I'm having to redo my analysis :-( It started because I noticed a mistake I'd made but in the process of redoing it, I realised I'd made lots of mistakes and now I'm having to learn new things whilst applying these. I'm feeling a 'bit' overwhelmed, which usually leads to procrastination but with my deadline coming up I can't afford that so I shall be reaaally pushing myself!

Thank you guys for sharing how you manage when things are not moving forward as expected, it really helps to know that others have difficulties too and it gives me ideas of what I can do when things are not great my end

Hey Skig, I hope you managed to get on with things yesterday.

This morning I'm working on my grant application. I really don't feel think I'll have the motivation to work long enough to get the parts I'm working on finished, but want to do enough so that I can finish them tomorrow.

Oh yes, I hope people have managed to do everything they need to do!

Once again, I didn't finish what I needed to do yesterday, and then I slept in this morning, so I'm only now sitting down to start work. I really need to sort my hours out, it's getting silly - I need to actually focus and get stuff done instead of messing around achieving nothing.

So, today I am going to finish the draft of my second year report.

Hello

I'm afraid yesterday wasn't the most productive day ever Star-shaped. I tried to tackle the dreaded analysis but it was not taking me very far so I decided to do some reading and writing instead. The writing itself didn't go far per se but I got lots of great ideas so that was good. Thanks for asking :-). How are things your end anyway? You got any further with the grant application?

Batfink, I wouldn't worry too much about not starting work until later on during the day... we all need time off and rest etc. Hm, at least that's what I tell myself (I didn't start myself until about an hour ago). On a serious note, it's true though, working 24/7 can't last long, we all need to rest, eat, have fun etc

Goals for today are to keep things small so I'm going to proofread an essay, write a bit and then do bits on the analysis, even if it's a little bit...

I hope you guys have a good and productive day 8-)

Hello
Not been on this forum for a long time until this weekend, but was wondering if I could join this thread with you guys. Aiming to work till at least 10 tonight. Finishing my MSc dissertation. It's due in on Friday, and it's been hair-raising for various reasons.

Today I aim to:
- Finish the Intro
- Finish the table describing how I derived my variables
- Finish the text about my variables

Hope it's alright to thread-crash in this way... Who collects the subs round here? :-)

Hello Ogriv and welcome to the thread! Good luck with today's goals. I find this thread really useful when I've got a deadline to meet!

Skig - I'm not usually worried about starting work late in the day, especially on a Sunday. But my deadline's tomorrow so I really need to get cracking!

Anyway, I'm making good progress. By which I mean, I seem to have got past the block that's stopped me finishing an awkward section of my report for most of this week, so it should be a lot more straightforward now - I hope!

O

Thanks for welcoming me aboard, Batfink!

It's good to have this thread. I'm now ploughing ahead with my intro, rather than entering my habitual catatonic state.

O

Finished the intro! :-)

But now I've remembered I promised to do some proofreading for the journal I'm involved with by tomorrow. So I'll have to do that tonight, and write up my methods stuff tomorrow. :-(

So I'm off to do that for the time being...

Good luck, Batfink! You can do it!

Thanks Ogriv, hope you get the proofreading done.

I've made some progress today, but still masses to do tomorrow. Probably have to get up at stupid o'clock to meet my deadline. Oh well, it has to be done.

Back to work now. Today is my deadline so all I'm doing is getting my report finished and emailed to my supervisors. Lots to do!

Hi All.

I'm feeling utterly overwhelmed at the moment and very stresse. I'm supposed to be in the final week or 2 of writing up - submission early sep. But I've also got 4 days of work I promised somoene to do, at the time to get some extra cash, but didn't receive the work until last week so now have to do that and can't back out :-( also have about 300 students on my back wanting feedback etc. and also have an interview to prepare for.

I'm going to try and spend 9-5 on my PhD today and really make some headway and get Chapter one done and dusted. THen 5-late I'll start work on the student and other stuff I have to do.

Good luck Sneaks, sounds like a lot of work but the end is in sight now, so I hope you find that you can steam through it okay. And that you can find moments to unwind and release the stress in the middle of it!

I'm making reasonable progress on today's work so far. Should meet my deadline, if I don't slacken my pace.

S

I know how you're feeling Sneaks, I'm more or less in the same boat too- supposed to be handing the thesis in for binding this Thursday but I have so much other stuff to do that I barely had time to work on it last week.

Skig- things went well yesterday, thanks. I actually got all of the stuff done that I needed to do yesterday and sent a draft off to my mentor. She sent it back within a few hours and I have to more or less rewrite it. Argh.

Anyway, my first goals today are to finish off the references from a journal paper and to submit it and then to make a few changes to one of my data chapters.
