The One Goal Thread

Morning!

I'm sat at my desk without knowing where to start... not good! I know I still have some editing to do, some proofreading, appendices, referencing and formatting. So:

1) To make a list!

Hi all,

Sorry I've been AWOL for a while...we have a puppy who is causing havoc with our lives (Sneaks check your inbox :-x)! Trying to do work whilst keeping an eye out for any toilet accidents is extremely difficult!

Goal 1- write up meeting
Goal 2- chase up non-responding schools
Goal 3- email further schools
Goal 4- plan for next few weeks
Goal 5- put up fence in back garden with hubby, to keep pesky puppy away from plants

:-s

Good morning Button, Skig and Batfink!

Back to writing today after threeeee days away. Oh dear. Two days of teaching and a day off yesterday for recovery from teaching exhaustion, yoga and making a big birthday cake for my dad's 70th.

So this morning I will read through my chapter to establish what I want to say in the conclusion. Then I will write for two hours. See you later.

Good luck with the dog Button - sounds traumatic!

as an insomniac, my concept of 'friday afternoon is no time for work' does not properly exist, hence I am choosing this moment to plan to write the first few thousand words by way of a general introduction to nineteenth century blefast...love it. farewell, social ability, farewell fun-finding faculties :P

Are we not supposed to work on Friday afternoons? How about weekends? Aw, that could be where I've been going wrong...:p

I'm really behind my schedule now so I'll have to make sure I don't take too many long breaks. My goals for today...

1) Finish editing some appendices that I started yesterday
2) Add and format more appendices
3) Proofread/edit
4) Referencing

Good luck to anyone who may be around!

Good morning!

Goals for the day:
1) Finish editing from yesterday
2) Do some proofreading
3) Referencing
4) Formatting

I've been doing the past three randomly (pending on what I fancy reading) but maybe I should have a system in place. Any ideas welcome (if anyone is around...)

personally I think it's good to move between referencing, editing and proofreading, particularly proofreading as things slip past you (well, me!) if you do that for too long at one time. However, I would do the formatting in a block so as to ensure you keep everything the same. What I have done is gone through it for the appearance of tables, then boxes I have, then back through it for heading styles etc etc. One of the last things I intend to do before I submit is to check [for the zillionith time] that the formatting is consistent throughout because I think it's something which could be easily picked up on by an examiner who quickley skims the thesis before giving it a deeper read - gulp:-(

Good Monday morning everyone...

I just had the weekend off, celebrating two birthdays - I was out until 4am on Saturday night - so am a bit slow, plus there is the usual Monday mode to deal with. Today I am going to do some reading for about 3 hours and then write for two hours afterwards. I didn't write on Friday because I was too distracted by cake decorating and party preparation, hence I'll be working on the conclusion of my chapter today.

Good luck everyone and see you later. X

too busy, but not enough motivation for PhD!

I have 2 lectures to plan, 2 seminars to plan (all from scratch i.e. no slides!), 8 dissertations to mark and I have to read my thesis, edit (because apparently my sup thinks its too long at the front - maybe that is because my supervisor told me to MOVE EVERYTHING TO THE FRONT! :-s ) and I have to write my discussion chapter by next friday!!!!

So goal 1 today is to read through intro chapter and jot down any notes for changes/things I need to feed through to the discussion

Hello everyone, seems like everyone's working hard at the moment!

Sneaks, if I were you I think I'd have strangled your supervisor by now!

I've worked out a week-by-week plan of what I need to do over the next six months, which means I now have weekly goals to meet. Which is actually kind of helpful, because I can set my daily goals from those and so keep an eye on whether I'm on track or not.
Goals for today:
1.) Write up notes from this morning's supervison meeting
2.) Sort out application for training course
3.) Print off documents I need for working from home this week
4.) Look at funding council calls for proposals
5.) Make changes to workplan suggested by Supervisors

urgh I'm working so slowly today. Its cold and I'm feeling sleepy. I've read through chapter 1. All I can think is that I'm pretty non-plussed on the whole thing. I have NO idea whether it reads well or badly, my sup has knocked every tiny bit of confidence out of me.

Hello Batfink and Sneaks!

Sneaks, i hope things pick up soon and you get better perspective on your chapter. Perhaps you need a rest or a short break from it?? Probably not possible given your schedule... so not sure how helpful I'm being.

Batfink, good luck with your new schedule.

I did two hours of writing, which I finished about half an hour ago. Only two hours of reading though - which I will have to do again, because I didn't spot a particular relevence that my sup recommended it for, although I did see other things that were really useful, if unnexpected.

I spent half an hour watching a PhD writing morivation 'seminar'. Nothing that I don't know already really. It made me laugh because getting rid of procrastination distractions was one of the key points of the lesson...

Good luck everyone. See you all on Wednesday because I am teaching and going to the department tomorrow, so no writing. Hope to read on the train though.

Good night XXX

Hah, Eska, the procrastination thing on the seminar made me laugh - so much of what I do to try to clarify the process of the PhD seems to have a strong whiff of procrastination about it! Like, for example, the workplan for the next six months that I've developed - I mean, sure, it's useful to have this and it's helped me to think through what I need to do, but did I really need to spend so long choosing colours for each different section??

Anyway, back to work today. And the first task is to update my workplan because I didn't finish doing that yesterday! My other goals for this week are:
2.) Finish formatting and cleaning my three SPSS data files
3.) Work on the details of the measurements I want to take on site
4.) Start developing hypotheses to test

Hi All, had a busy morning. Just had convo with sup who has decided to re-write my last chapter as a publication so she can understand it better - erm now really isn't the time, surely!?

Main aim for today is to read through at least 2 chapters and cut them down, sort out typos etc. I also have to practice a lecture for tomorrow and put at least an hour into creating a new lecture.

how do you get over the afternoon slump? I had a massive pasta dish for lunch and the only thing keeping me awake is my cold feet :-(
