Hello everyone! I'm glad to hear others are around :-)
Eska, I hope you managed to do everything, sounds like a mammoth task! I'm not sure how to remove that much either, I'm just thinking about what's really relevant and trying to be ruthless. I've already submitted so I need to transform a 12,000 word chapter into a 4,500 article.
Batfink, please don't avoid the thread because you're behind with stuff. We're here to support you and it sounds like you could do with a helping hand. I hope you get well soon!
Sneaks, congrats on starting your job! I hope you're enjoying it! Sounds like you're really busy (as usual!)...
As for me, I didn't manage to cut that section down to 800. It's at 1000 at the moment but I haven't got a clue what else I can remove it so I'm leaving it for now. I've started to work on a lengthier section. It's around 2,000 and I need it down to around 700 eek I'm not sure if I should just keep trying to remove chunks of the text or just rewrite. Anyone any advice?
Thanks Skig. I hope I feel better soon too! A doctor's appointment this afternoon, and then I have to go into hospital for surgery in two weeks - a minor op, but I'm really hoping it just solves everything. Luckily my supervisors are being lovely about it all - I told them about the op, which takes a day or so to recover from, and they immediately assumed I'd be taking the whole week off. Which I think I'm going to plan to do - if I get bored and want to work I'll just do some reading, but otherwise I'll just watch TV and go for walks and stuff. Sounds like bliss!
Anyway, back to work today. Had a good meeting with my supervisors on Friday and am feeling less daunted by the workload now. And besides, what's the worst that can happen, overrunning slightly at the end of the three years? It's not the end of the world.
Goals for today:
1.) Write up notes from Friday's supervision meeting and email to supervisors - DONE
2.) Finish list of questions for data analysis
3.) Do a bit more cleaning of SPSS files
4.) Start work on hypotheses to test
Hello everyone
I too have been otherwise engaged the last few days and am in procrastination heaven today. Look at the time and I've achieved sweet FA so far!! So, there's no two ways about it, I need to use this thread to force me to kick into action RIGHT NOW!
Goal 1: Photocopy a couple of articles
Goal 2: Print off and post a letter
Goal 3: Look out planning scribbles for an article that I never ended up writing
Goal 4: Catch up with UNI RELATED emails
There. all fairly simple and quick, but it'll do to get me started ;-)
Good luck with it all MissPiggy, sometimes it's just the first hurdle that needs to be leapt and then it's easy after that!
I've completed three of my four tasks for today, so just need to clean up my SPSS files a little more and I'll actually have achieved everything I wanted! Happy with that. If I can keep edging through the work like that I'll actually get somewhere.
Hi Batfink and Mis Piggy,
Sounds like things are going well for you.I barely have time to write here, so sorry for not being more chatty!
After a great but knackering weekend I finally got started at about 11am this morning. I wrote and edited until 1:45pm, just one niggly reference to chase and this draft is done. Im going to leave it until the proof read later this week and concentrate on teaching stuff until Thursday or Friday. Now i have to prep a lecture for Wednesday eeeeek. I worked out that for what I'm getting paid I should do about 7 hours prep - I have th e rest of today and tonight and tomorrow evening as I am tutoring in the morning and travelling. So hey ho here we go...
First I need to read the weekly reading.
Then decide what the focus for the lecture will be. At present it's vague - I'm thinking of drawing on my masters dissertation, best to use existing stuff at this late stage I feel.
Then put a PowerPoint together, including whizzzo images they'll be impressed with. HHHmmmmmm. It needs to be about 50 minutes long... euuurrrggggghh. Will try and get that done tonight.
Plus a 40 minute researh excercise for them, which I will devise tomorrow nIght, I think.
So that's my planning done. I hope I manage all this...
Hi all, I've prepped my PowerPoint. It's ok. Probably about 45 mins long if I speak slowly... Will plan their excercise on the train tomorrow, then PowerPoint it up in the evening - or in the hour I have before the lecture starts.
Good luck with the teaching, Eska!
I've been swimming this morning so only just sat down at my desk, but feel invigorated by it. Today I am going to make a lot of progress, I'm determined!
Tasks for the day:
1.) Put in claim form for training course I had to pay for by credit card
2.) Finish cleaning 3 SPSS data files
3.) Start running frequencies on SPSS
4.) Go through responses to one open question
Afternoon folks,
Back at my desk after a morning’s field work, so where to start! Like you Batfink I’m determined to be productive today – but then I say that every day and usually fail miserably!
Goal 1: Review and comment on draft article
Goal 2: Update field diary
Goal 3: Return book to library
Goal 4: Email sup about recruitment issue
Goal 5: Go over random notes and update ‘to do’ list accordingly
Goal 6: Make work plan for the rest of the week
Right, that should keep me out of mischief for a while. Good luck with your tasks Batfink and good luck with your lecture Eska!
hi all,
I'm working on my PhD today. I have 17000 words of lit review, I want to reduce that to at most 14,000 really - would be nice to get it less, but I think even that is going to be a major struggle.
Good luck with the task Eska. I've done 3 lectures in the last 3 weeks, which I thought would only last 25 mins and they last the full hour when you actually have to explain things to a sea of confused looking faces!
Hi all.
After spending almost all morning (got a day off from work) trying to find a solution to a problem with NVivo (oh I hate it!!!!!) and not find one, at the end, it's time to set some new goals for today.
So,
Goal 1: Read a paper on the section that I have to write
Goal 2: Read another paper relevant to what I have already written
Goal 3: Go to the gym
Good luck everybody!
Well, by way of an update, 7 hours later I have managed to cover ONE of my goals today. This place is interruption central! :-s As nice and as helpful as it can be to have interaction with colleagues, but today was just ridiculous. I've only just managed to get my first goal finished!! Time to go home now. It's freezing in this office. Over and out.
Hello everyone
Slept in this morning (was very tired) and then had to run around like a mad thing cleaning the flat before the agency came round to do an inspection, so only got a small amount of work done earlier. They've been and gone now, so I can get on with some more work. Goals for the rest of today:
1.) Finish cleaning my final SPSS file (yay!)
2.) Code responses to one open question
Ok....That was it for today...
I don't have any more power to keep going......
I managed to do more coding for half of my interviews. The other half will be done tomorrow...
Now I am off for a dance performance where the performers are handicapped people...
Have a nice evening!!!!!!
