Morning all!
I'm determined to make some inroads into, well, everything today. Anyone else feel that they are constantly a million miles away from being on top of their workload? :-(
The main aim of today is transcribing. Groan. So nothing like warming up a bit with a couple of mytomatos before breakfast time.
Goal 1. Transcribe for 2 mytomatos' worth. GO!
Morning everyone.
MissPiggy - I so totally relate to feeling like I'm a million miles from achieving everything I need to. It's getting a little paralysing when I look at how muhc there is to do - forcing myself to focus on the small steps and keep chipping away at it!
I was in hospital last Monday, all fine now but it's taken me a few days to recover so I haven't even thought about the PhD since then. I'm a little scared by how much I need to get done and how far behind schedule I now am. So, time to set some sensible and realistic goals!
Today's goals:
1.) Write up the hypotheses that have already come out of my initial data analysis
2.) Brainstorm the other hypotheses/areas I know I need to test
3.) Make further progress on analysis of frequencies/descriptive stats (finishing it would be great but possibly too much for today)
Sorry to hear that you've not been well Batfink! I hope you're getting back on track now though and feeling much better. As if PhD life wasn't challenging enough on its own!
I'm back on here today because I've seriously got to get some stuff done today and despite working with daily 'to do' lists anyway this thread does help to keep me on the straight and narrow so much more! Funny really how that works. I'm sure there's a PhD topic in there... :p
Anyways, must get my skates on!
Goal 1. Track down info for someone then email them back
Goal 2. Summarise main themes from recent interviews
Oh, looks like I'm only conversing with myself today :-) Never mind, jotting down my goals here does help so I'll carry on regardless. After spending much of the day on goal 2, now a few smaller ones to kid me into thinking I'm actually moving forward:
Goal 3. Post info sheet
Goal 4. Update field diary
Goal 5. Respond to email enquiry
Heh, sorry MissPiggy, been trying not to get distracted by internet. Not that I achieved a huge amount anyway (hence only being about to finish for the day now!) I really do need to stop my procrastinating. Will work on that tomorrow!
I didn't exactly achieve my goals, because I realised there was something more pressing to work on which would make the goals more worthwhile once it was done. So I have made some progress at least. Meeting supervisor in the morning - dreading it really, I know he'll be very nice but the fact is I am falling behind. Oh well, I'll get there. And what's the worst that could happen - overrunning the three years a little? Financially problematic but not the end of the world if it happens!
Had a useful meeting with one of my supervisors this morning, and am ready to get back on track with the work now. He doesn't seem concerned about me dropping behind schedule, though he also seems to think I can write up my thesis in three months flat, as if!! Anyway, I can get on with things now so feel okay about it all!
I have a meeting this afternoon so won't get much else done. But, goals for today:
1.) Finish writing up notes from meeting and email to supervisors
2.) Sort booking and payment for training course accommodation and travel
3.) Spend whatever time is left going through journal alerts and downloading interesting articles
Is nobody else around at the moment? Oh well, I'll keep talking to myself!
Today, I intend to
1.) Update my work plan for the year, as suggested by my supervisor
2.) Finish my data analysis plan
3.) Design poster for upcoming conference
Hi Batfink, I'm here!
I saw my supervisor about my latest chapter draft and am going to complete a final-for-now draft by Christmas.
Not sure if I'll be working today though. Am going to the public service strike demonstration later. I suppose I could read through the chapter before I go...
Good luck with you goals!
Oh cool. I considered going to my local public sector demonstration today, but I have a bad cold (lost my voice almost completely) so I think staying in in the warm will do me more good!
Good luck with finishing the draft off!
Morning everyone
I've successfully run the gauntlet of picketers trying to keep me out of the building and am back at my desk for the morning with all sorts of grand plans. Batfink, I salute you for making an active move to keep away from the internet and being successful at it to boot! The internet really is a curse when you're easily distracted - like me!
Goals for the morning:
Goal 1. Update to do list
Goal 2. Copy a couple of pages from book
Goal 3. Tidy up interview transcripts
Goal 4. Run preliminary data analysis
Goal 5. Return library book
Good luck everyone with their goals today!
Yay, finished my first two goals, and while working on my data analysis plan I had a blinding revelation about a section I'd missed out which I really need to start on first, so now I'm all enthusiastic about how I will go about that tomorrow.
For the rest of today, though, I'm going to work on my poster design. A nice end-of-day job.
Good luck everyone!
Hello everyone, if anyone else is around!
Today I'm working on describing my sample, and thinking about the tests I need to run to test the effects of various demographics in my data. That's the plan, anyway. I may lose the will to live at some point though, and when I do I'll go back to designing my poster!
Not sure if anyone is around. Doesn't look like this thread is being used that often anymore, but I shall try to pop in more often as work is not moving forward quickly enough. I'm setting myself only two (and a half) goals today:
1) To finish writing a small section for my paper
2) To review what I've written so far
2 1/2) to plan my viva prep
Hope you all manage to have a productive day today!
Hi Skig!
I'm here, even though I'm not meant to be. Have just realised that the meeting I thought was at 11am is actually at 1pm, so there's me rushing back to the office for 11am, unhelpfully interrupting my participant recruitment in the process. I am such an idiot, so I am! Anyway, this means I have an unexpected window of desk time now which must be filled with some productivity! So, my goals for this are:
Goal 1. Make strong cup of tea to speed up hangover recovery :$
Goal 2. Action email query
Goal 3. Make list of work to do over the weekend
Goal 4. Make some notes for meeting at 1pm (NOT 11am - durrrr..!)
Good luck with it, Skig. Have you got a date for the viva?
Today I slept in, I've got a cold and it's getting worse so I'm going to give myself an easy day. I have a poster to design, and there are some admin-type jobs I need to do, and then I'll start my weekend early and hope I feel better by Monday!
