The One Goal Thread

S

Hi all

Lindalou and Batfink thanks for that (and I hope all your meetings go well Batfink). I do feel a bit guilty for not studying (still!) but I think it's the adjustment period. We'll get there eventually.

Button, I hope the article is not exactly the same, fingers crossed.

tokyorabbit - thank you for the tip.

I've only got until lunchtime to study so will make it a late lunch so I can spend more time studying;-)

I've got a book on vivas so will split time between the book and thesis.

I hope you all have a productive Friday and a lovely weekend

L

Hi all,

Oh no Button, that's scary! If it's any consolation it happened to me at the start of the year BUT it's not the end of the world. My sup just told me critique the paper within my thesis, examining the similarities and the differences. But I know how you feel - especially as so much emphasis is put on originality. Don't panic, have a chat with your sups and see what they think.

Hope everyone else has a lovely and productive day, I'm just chipping away at my chapter today, filling in the gaps (thanks Skig (up) !) and then I'm finishing early to have my hair cut! I've been working since about 7.30 this morning, it's amazing how much difference getting up that early makes (!) an epiphany at this stage in the game! I'll see how I feel tomorrow though!:$

Hi all, had brief break from the forum over the last week. Trying to be productive but I have a friend coming over for coffee this afternoon, got a house to tidy and probs have about an hour to crack on with some stats! Hope everyone else is having a more productive Friday than me....promise I will make up for it next week!!

M

Humm Goal of the day.. Focus for at least 10 - 15 minutes in one single topic...

B

Hi all, thanks for the thoughts regarding the journal article I discovered! I read it and it is similar in areas, although it quite specifically focuses on gender which isn't what I'm doing. I felt much better after reading it! I mentioned it to sup and she seemed to think it was a good thing, so I'm happy.

Anyway, I had the weekend off so I've got LOADS to do today. Top that off with an argument with hubby already this morning, and I'm feeling a bit crappy!

On a positive note, I met sup and she was really pleased with my meth chapter, she said it was excellent so that's one chapter done and dusted for now! Ok, best get cracking.

Goal 1- email tutor
Goal 2- sort read journals
Goal 3- do meeting form
Goal 4- edit meth
Goal 5- findings plan

L

Good morning!

Sounds like a mixed bag on a Monday for you Button, but how great that your sup likes your meth chapter, well done!

Goals for me over the next week are:

1. Write the final section in Chapter 3
2. Write the introduction and conclusion for Chapter 3
3. Mark my students
4. Receive feedback on Chapter 5

I think that will do for now! Ideally I'd like to get Chapter 3 and the marking wrapped up by Wednesday so I can get started on Chapter 6!

So specific goal for today is to get the final section in Chapter 3 written, the intro and conclusion shouldn't take too long but I have the afternoon off tomorrow to do some wedding related stuff (exciting!) and it's half term next week so I need to make every day count this week!

Good luck everyone, have a great day (up)

Ooh, Lindalou, wedding stuff sounds exciting!

And Button, good luck today, sounds like you are making great progress though.

I'm spending the next two days rewriting the journal article that I met the co-authors about on Friday. It needs a bit of restructuring and thought so I want to really bury myself in it. Just a couple of admin-type jobs to do first, and I need to brave the ice to go to the greengrocer (I'm in danger of developing scurvy if I don't eat some vegetables soon!), so that probably means I won't properly get started til lunchtime. Oh well, tomorrow I'll get up early - whoever it was who said a couple of posts back that it's really productive getting up early is dead right, I just couldn't face it this morning, my flat's too cold!

B

Lindalou I loved planning our wedding, I miss it, although it was a little stressful!

Batfink I completely agree about how much difference it makes starting work early!

Goals 1-3 are done, goal 4 is nearly done so I'm doing okay.

L

Hello peoples!

Aaah wedding planning is very exciting but it's getting quite stressful now with all the bills arriving! I thought it would be great to get married during the write up of my PhD but now I'm not so sure! I don't want to be on honeymoon feeling guilty that I'm not doing any writing!

Hope you're all getting on ok today, I'm getting very cross with Word as it keeps underlining all my sentences in green and telling me I am using a passive voice! AAAARGH! Short of re-wording all my sentences so I sound like Yoda I can't make them go away! Anyway, I'm getting close to finishing goal 1 thankfully so I can go and have some lunch soon then crack on with the intro and discussion later on.

B

Ooh yes Linda, the wedding bills are not the fun bit! Is your wedding soon? We decided to get married during my first year, so there was no guilt about not doing PhD stuff (up)

I absolutely hate it when word start going crazy with the green underlining, it drives me mad!

Goal 4 is done, so it's now on to my findings. Bit bored though!

L

Hey Button, the wedding is in April so not long to go now! So did you change your name or have you kept your maiden name for your PhD?

Well I was having a great day, goal 1 complete and most of goal 2 too but I've just had a letter through the post from uni that has thrown me off kilter somewhat so I'm going to do something else this afternoon that doesn't need too much concentration like literature searching or reading (and probably eat some chocolate or something too!)

Oh dear Lindalou, hope you manage to make some progress today anyway!

I'm achieving very little. I've done a few admin type jobs, and written up minutes of a meeting, and that's about it. I just can't seem to get going today. Maybe I'll not worry about it, and spend the rest of the day on little jobs and start proper work tomorrow.

B

Batfink/Linda- hope your days are going a bit better than earlier.

I've made good progress today so I'm happy. I think that's me done for the day now, ready to start again tomorrow eugh!

B

Hi all,

I only really have one goal today; to finish the first section of my findings which needs a lot of work, so I'm not sure how realistic that is!

L

Hello,

Eugh still feel rubbish after yesterday :-( but I have a goal for today!

Goal - finish marking students by 12pm - it's taken me nearly 2 hours to mark the first group so I'm not doing very well!

Hope you all have a good day (up)
