The One Goal Thread

L

Good luck with that Batfink - I don't have a university laptop but I have had to try and download software onto a public service sector computer before and it's not fun! I've spent more time on the phone to the IT department than one person should in their working day!

It is an awful time at the moment, we want to buy soon but it's just not feasible at the moment *sigh*

Anyway, I'm making some inroads into chapter 7 which is good, hurray! Hope you are both having a successful day so far!

Ooh I've just found another study which looks at the same population as me, but I've found something that doesn't make any sense... Should I contact the author and how should I do it? Do you think I should just ask them to tell me more about it and see if it then makes sense to me? I'm now also massively worrying that I've missed something really important :$

I'd send them an email, Lindalou, being friendly but asking them a specific question. I've done that a couple of times and it's been fine, but if they're really busy (as academics tend to be) they may not want to have a vague chat so an actual question might be best.(Also - don't worry, you probably haven't missed anything!!)

Software downloaded successfully - it was a bit of a pain but I got through it. I'm just finishing off my second conference funding application, then I need to look at friend's questionnaire, and then finally after all of that I'll be able to play around with the new software and work out what I need to do to get my next bit of analysis started.

B

Good to see you're both doing well!

I've done goals 1 and 2, and have also managed to sign for a new house in between, so we are officially moving again argh!

I'm just going to have a run through of my presentation, and then I'll move onto goal 3.

Ooh, congratulations on the house! (And also commiserations on the misery of moving!!)

Everything seems to be taking a long time today. I've only just finished my two funding applications, so now I have to look at friend's questionnaire, and by the time I've done that it's going to be fairly late to try messing around with a brand new statistical test in brand new software - I'd probably be better off starting that bright and early tomorrow. And that means I can spend some more time sorting my flat out for moving.

L

Sounds like you've both had successful days! I think I'm coming down with some lurgy, I have pain in my chest and feeling a bit swimmy so going to call it a day and get some rest. I'm having trouble getting hold of the author so I may have to try one of the co-authors, but thank you for your reassurance Batfink! And congratulations on the house Button, you're both going to be busy with moving then! (up)

B

Hope you're feeling better today Linda!

I made good progress yesterday so want to do the same today.

Goal 1- finish making links to lit in findings chapter 1, print and read
Goal 2- practice next part of presentation
Goal 3- run through whole presentation
Goal 4- think of any questions to ask sup tomorrow
Goal 5- pack bag to go to uni for teaching tomorrow
Goal 6- edit plan for few weeks seeing as I'm moving at the most problematic time!

Yes, hope you feel better Linda. And good luck with the long list of actions, Button.

I've just dealt with various emails I needed to answer today, so that now leaves the day clear to get on with the new software and new statistical tests. I'm not quite sure how to approach this, so I guess my first goal is to work that out!

L

Gosh Button that sounds like a long list! Hope its going ok, and hope you're having fun with your new software Batfink!

I feel rough today so I'm going to be literature searching which shouldn't be too taxing hopefully! Why do bugs always come when you least need them?!

B

Sorry to hear you're still not feeling well Linda! At least your bug didn't come during your wedding/mini-moon though hey?!

My list is getting bigger rather than smaller! We've decided to move at the most stupid time ever grr, so having to meet deadlines earlier and it's all a bit stressful! But hey ho, I'll get there.

I've done goals 1, 3, 4 and 6, but I still need to read through my chapter. Edited goals for today:

-read chapter
-do short report
-practice next bit of presentation and run through
-pack for tomorrow
-lit links to findings chapter 4

Argh!

L

I suppose, better to be ill now rather than whilst on holiday!

Well, I've had an interesting afternoon - I've received some more negative feedback so properly depressed and feeling sorry for myself now! That'll teach me to check my email when I'm sick rather than calling in sick! Well done with getting most of your goals done though, that's really good! (up)

B

Oh no Linda, negative feedback sucks (down) it could just be that it seems even more negative than usual because you feel crappy though?

Goals still left to do today:
-do minor edits to chapter
-practice next bit of presentation and run through
-pack for tomorrow
-lit links to findings chapter 4
-gym

Not sure whether I'll realistically get through all this though! Here's hoping!

B

My list is finally getting shorter, yippee! Left to do today:

-practice next bit of presentation and run through
-pack for tomorrow
-gym

Going to pack now whilst making an early tea, then I'll go through my presentation for an hour, and then after that I'll go to the gym! Hopefully I'll be back from the gym by 8.30, so I can get a quick shower and snuggle up with hubby in my jamas and watch the apprentice (up)

Have a good evening all, and I'll 'see' you tomorrow!

Oh, I hope Button's right, Linda, and it is feeling crappy that's making the feedback seem worse. I never can judge that sort of thing if I'm feeling at all under the weather.

Button, well done on the progress through your list!

I've made some reasonable progress on using the new software to do new statistical analysis, so tomorrow I can press on with that. Tonight I'm going to do some thinking about a journal article I want to write.

Morning!

I wasn't planning to come onto campus today because there's a rail strike so there's only one train an hour running, but I'd forgotten about a training course this afternoon that I can't miss. So I'm here, after a slow and crowded journey. I've got a little under three hours before the training course, so I'm just going to keep working on figuring out the new statistical technique in the new software. Hopefully I can make some sense of it!

Good luck today everyone!
