The One Goal Thread

L

Gosh it's gone quiet!

Where is everyone today? I'm mainly reading today but thought I'd pop on and say hello - hope everyone's work is going well!

L

Looks like I'm the only one around here! I'm planning a paper for a conference so I'm working on structuring that today. Hope everyone's having a good day, wherever you are!

Hello Linda! It is quiet at the moment... lots of people on holidays I think!

I haven't been around for a couple of days because I was working flat out on a journal paper and a job application and didn't even have time to come here! But both are done now, so I can relax a little. Or rather, not be going flat-out to get stuff done!

Met my supervisors this morning to discuss the journal paper I'd drafted, so my plan for the rest of the day is to write up notes from the meeting and then start redrafting the paper.

C

Today's goal is to get a finished first draft of Chapter 1! :)

Hi everyone!

I am back from holidays, had a wonderful time with my friends close to nature. It was refreshing and rejuvenating and very much needed!! Hope everyone is doing ok, and good to see that all are progressing on writing thesis, papers and conference presentations. Well done all (up) I am going to take it easy today as I am still achy and tired from hiking, so the goals for today are:

Goal 1 - Check simulations - DONE.
Goal 2 - Combine simulations.
Goal 3 - Launch new simulations.

I will finish these and see if I can do more. Have a good day!

I completed all my goals except for the fact that I found that something is wrong with the results which I got. I have no idea why :-( I need to investigate this but can't be bothered to do anything now. I am going home now, got to skype my fiancé (it has been ages since we skyped). I will come back with a fresh mind tomorrow morning and troubleshoot. Have a nice week end everyone!

I managed to achieve my goal yesterday, kind of. Very sketchy draft of Chapter 1 done. Now I need to speed read a lot of books to add some substance.

Just gave my quantitative analysis chapter to a statistician. Should have done it ages ago, but I'm an avoidance coper. Now all I have to do is sit patiently (and weep silently) whille he looks over it and points out all my horrible mistakes.

Least it's Friday...not that that means anything in PhD land...
Hope everyone's well xx

L

You all seem to be amazingly productive people so I thought I'd slip today's goal into the thread and see if that gives me some extra motivation.

- finish the latest set of corrections my supervisor has given me for the journal paper I'm writing

I've been working on this thing for so long I'm sick of it. The sooner it's done and I can worry about my other sections the better.

Morning everyone, and welcome Labpixie, hope the thread helps!

Espresso, glad you had a good holiday!

I took last Thursday and Friday off work, and then the whole weekend too - I think I really needed a bit of a break, I've been working hard for the last few weeks. And on Friday I'm going to visit my fiance for the weekend in the town he's living in now, the first time since he moved there - it's a seaside place so we're going to do all the holiday type things. So a short week and a sort of holiday to look forward to! Feel like I need it still!

Goals for today:
1.) Restructure and start rewriting journal article after comments from supervisors
2.) Start filling in a job application

Morning to anyone still around!

Yesterday I didn't make as much progress as I wanted - distracted by other things - so today my goals are the same as yesterday!
1.) Work on rewriting journal paper
2.) Finish job application

Good luck with the work, anyone who's still working!

Hi Batfink (and every one else around),

Morning! Thanks. It is nice that you are taking a break, you deserve one for all the hard work!!

Welcome Labpixie, I hope you find posting on this thread useful. Good luck (up)

I haven't been working much lately, I don't know why. I can't motivate myself to do anything :-( I hope this shall pass! Anyway for today:

Goal 1 - Trouble shoot simulations.
Goal 2 - Email collaborator.
Goal 3 - Make notes for meeting.
Goal 4 - Meet supervisor.

Have a nice day!

L

Hello,

Thanks for the welcomes, Batfink and Espresso. I hope you've had good days. :)

Batfink - hope you have a lovely visit with your fiance. My boyfriend is living in France at the moment and I don't get to visit again for about 4 weeks *grumble*.

The good news is that I went through and fixed all my corrections so that's done. The bad news (well, not actually bad, but bad for my chances of ticking things off my to-do list) is I identified another couple of experiments I could do for it. A chemist's work is never done!

Morning everyone!

Labpixie - Well done on fixing all of your corrections (up) and good luck with the rest :-)

I managed to achieve all of my goals yesterday. The supervisory meeting went on well except that my primary supervisor will be away for the next 2 weeks so he won't be able to give comments on my chapters. My secondary supervisor came into work after a long break so he is probably going to be busy for a while as well. A post-doc colleague of mine has offered to correct my thesis which is great. I will be sending the chapters to 3 of my colleagues/collaborators. There is so much to do and so little time. I don't think I will be able to submit in the first week of Aug :-( Anyway I will keep plodding on and see what happens. I have to work on 2 journal articles as well and submit it by the end of September.

Goal 1 - Check simulations.
Goal 2 - Combine results.
Goal 3 - Launch new simulations.
Goal 4 - Email collaborator.
Goal 5 - Give a printed copy of thesis to post-doc.

Have a nice day everyone!

Avatar for espresso

I have completed all of my previously listed goals.

Goal 6 - Read documentation on measurement and analysis.
Goal 7 - Email colleague to fix an appointment to do measurements.

How is every one doing today?

L

Wow! You seem to be having a very productive day.

Today I'm just messing about in the lab (i.e. running experiments). Fingers crossed they go well so I can process the data and add the results to the article tomorrow.
