Morning everyone!
Yesterday was a frustrating and unsuccessful day for me, making progress but failing to finish the two papers I really needed to finish. I think I need some distance from the one I've been working on for the last couple of weeks, so I'm not going to look at that for a couple of days. This mornign I'm going to try to get the other paper finished, and then this afternoon I'll get on with my data analysis.
I find the tomatoes method only really works when I'm writing a chapter or something like that - something where I expect to be doing the same task for several hours at a time. If I'm swapping between small tasks I tend to do one task, take a very short break, then get onto the next task, so a similar thing really, just not ruled by a timer.
Good morning!
Day so far has been quite good, done some admin already and I've been swimming! Last time I went I was sore for days afterwards so I decided to go easy today.
Goals for today:
1- do some reading
2- work on my poster
3- edit analysis section of my journal article
4- edit intro thesis
As for tomatoes, I generally find it quite useful. I know what you mean when there's 5 mins left and you don't want to start a new thing. I just use those 5 mins to do some admin or look up references, etc. I've assigned a number of tomatoes for each of my goals so I'll let you know how it went later.
Have a good day everyone!
Morning everyone!
Back from a good long swim this morning and now ready to start work. I want to spend half the day working on my data analysis - finishing off my notes on what I need to do and making a start on the actual analysis - and the other half of the day starting to rewrite the Background chapter of my thesis. Time to make some real progress!
Morning all!
Hi Batkink! Well done with the swimming and good luck with your goals. IT may not feel like you're making much progress but the way I see it, any moves forward are steps in the right direction ;)
I've been working on 5 different things for the past few days and just managed to finish the first one this morning so I'm a happy bunny :) I'll have a read through again tomorrow before sending it to sups. I'm also hoping to finish my poster in soon so fingers crossed.
Goals for today: do some more reading till lunchtime, then work on the poster, then my article and if there's time left, my intro. Breathe in, breathe out...
Good afternoon everyone!
Skig, nice work with the tomatoes. Batfink, long swimming feels very good. I also have been running this morning. An easy run, followed by a large cup of coffee(20oz) made me awake. Met with sup yesterday. After discussing with the work I have done and my questions, he pointed out a particular problem I need to solve in this week, and scheduled next meeting to be this saturday. He seems like to meet with me more. I know I need sup to push me more as I am a huge procrastinator, but still feel pressure, (the amount of pressure is under control though). I waked up at midnight in three consecutive days. hope that wont happen too often.
yesterday:
write down knowledge, test and results about autocorrelation pdf.
my goal today:
1. one dimension integration test
2. think about different ways to solve the problem.
Hello everyone! Good to see lots of people actively getting on with stuff.
I've ground to a halt with my stats analysis, but have made some progress, so that's good. Going to look at restructuring my opening/background chapter now.
Morning all!
I managed to get loads more done yesterday by swapping to a completely different task later in the day, so I'm going to try the same thing again today. This morning I'll work on my data analysis, and later I'll return to editing one of my journal articles.
Good luck to everyone else today!
Good morning!
Yesterday was another slow moving day but I think I've come to realise that the tiredness from the pregnancy is taking over and I should just take a nap if I need to so batteries get recharged.
Goals for today:
1) admin
2) have a last look at my poster - it's finally done and just need sups to have a look through :-)
3) do some reading
4) tackle the analysis section of my article - this is dragging a bit so I'm only planning to get a smaller section done today
Have a productive day!
Good afternoon everyone:
Batfink27, I also find having two projects on hands works good, which is like walking on two legs. One leg is too tired, then other leg will move. Skig, pregnancy is a long hard journey, take care.
I hardly did anything related to my project yesterday. I was way short of sleep, which enable me can hardly focus. Afraid of not being able to fall asleep again, I didn't take a nap in day time neither. I watched an online live chat on twitter: #phdchat. Don't feel very interested though. Last night is better, I waked up around 5am, took a sip of milk, then fell asleep again.
my goals today:
1. make sure the test method itself is right. In a metaphor, to testify the gauge is accurate.
2. tried method one according to Mr. benyaya's suggestion.
Ooooh, been invited for an interview for the job I was asked to reapply for a couple of weeks ago. This makes me very happy! I'd love the job, so fingers crossed. The interview isn't until 11 September so loads of time to get anxious about it...
Benyaya, I agree about the two projects thing, and the two legs analogy describes it perfectly! Hope you manage to get some decent sleep.
And Skig, I'm not at all surprised the pregnancy is making you tired! Do look after yourself.
I'm struggling to make myself do any more work today, but I know I need to. I've made some progress with the data analysis but am now stuck, so will come back to that fresh tomorrow. Time to get on with one of my journal articles, when I can summon the energy!
Congrats Batfink! I really hope you get the job!!
Thank you Benyaya and Batfink. Last night I was thinking that it didn't matter if I don't get to do as much I'd originally planned before baby is born, as I'll still have time to do it afterwards but... then today, I realised that one of the things I've been working and struggling with isn't quite right and it'll need a lot more work done :( all the pressure to do loads before baby is born came back then which is not good for either of us!
Right now I feel like I'm swimming against the current here so I'm going to do another few bits and bobs and call it a day I think. I just need the headspace...
