Dr or Mrs on job application?
G

Thanks DocInsanity. i thought that was the case.

Another quick question - the job application asks for the highest qualification held (education section). Do I say Doctorate? Or do I still just have to say my Masters?

Dr or Mrs on job application?
G

Minor question, but I want to know if I can put Dr on my job application yet or should I still use Mrs?

I passed my viva a few weeks ago, but still have corrections to do. I'm guessing I still have to use Mrs. Is that right?

Thanks

Motivation in final weeks
G

Different things work for different people. For me, the motivation was the thought of not having to get up and go straight to my desk to write any more. I made a list of things I would do after I submitted - silly things like stay in bed late, read a book for pleasure, not do anything PhD related for at least a week (or however long). I also booked to go away right after submission, so that helped too.

You can all do it!! You're so close! GOOD LUCK!!

Devastated
G

I'm so very sorry to hear you're going through this. My mum never got to see me be called Dr either. Your post made me cry. As the others have said, take time to grieve - I cannot stress enough how important this is. if you don't, it will come bite you on the ass at some point in the future. Bereavement counselling is great for this, but you need time too. Speak to your supervisor(s) if you can, but also your personal tutor if you have one and the university.

I really am so sorry. We never forget, but this will pass and things will get easier as time goes on. I promise.
Take care, g

First week PhD - Disappointment

Quote From DocInsanity:
I am reminded of an excellent quotation of Albert Einstein
If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it?

^^^THIS!^^^

But seriously, ZaoRazor, everyone (who's human) feels like this at the start (and throughout!). It's completely normal and you'll find it goes away and then comes back again from time to time. you're doing the right thing seeking support - this forum is awesome. You're going to be fine! Take a breath, and like DocInsanity said, break things down into smaller chunks.

Good luck!!

I'm suspending for 6 months and terrified. Can anyone share some experiences?
G

Hi. I've never suspended my study, but I just wanted to say that I think it's a very courageous thing to do. Admitting that you're struggling and making the time and headspace to deal with it takes a lot of strength. I hope things go well for you. Good luck!

interview thank you letter
G

Joanna - are you based in the UK? I'm UK and I've never heard of anyone doing this, and my feelings echo those of ToL. This may be more common in other countries, however.

Sorry we can't help you much. Maybe someone else can shed some light....

Viva next week: tips and advice for before and during?
G

Thanks, Dr Jeckyll. A good bit of advice. Fortunately I'm only working part-time, so I should have time to cover the corrections once the list finally comes through! =D

Thank you Moonblue, chickpea, and ToL. It was a really lovely, positive experience, and just how I think a viva is meant to be. You'll be great TreeofLife - feel free to message me anytime x

How far under maximum words in Humanities?
G

It really is what you say, rather than how much. My max was 100,000, but my thesis came in around 70-75,000 with no quibbles from my examiners. Good luck!

Reviewing articles for 'blacklisted' journals
G

I didn't know about this list ToL - thanks for posting the link. Very interesting. Hmmm I'm not sure about your question, but do you want your name to be associated in any way with such a journal? I'm not sure what their specific 'crimes' are, but I would probably think about that. Do they publish a list of the names of their reviewers? If so, perhaps it's best to avoid.

I'm only going on gut instinct though. I'm sure more experienced hands than me can give you some better advice.

P.S. Eds: if you follow the link, there's lots of info about what makes them 'blacklisted'.
