'...sadly most people worry about getting the place when they should first decide if they're ready and up for working at the level required'.

Didn't like to say that bit at all. Glad you did. My first thought re this whole thread.

No matter how you spin it the outcome will be the same. No meant to be rude or funny [not my style]. but this gent will do exceedingly well to get onto any decent MBA [or suchlike] with a 3rd straight from Uni [unless its Oxford or suchlike].

You're talking MBA's? I would say none of the Management schools that are worth getting in to would have you. Probably the ones that would aren't worth getting into. Sorry if that sounds cold comfort.

In what area...mind-reading?

can you guys have a debate for me please?!!?

Plenty of good hobbies out there if you have time on your hands. Lots of other things will advance a career in teaching more than a PhD.

MSc Admission Oz.

Did you get onto a postgrad programme with a lower class degree than normally required?

I think a lot of 'it' comes back to the erosion in the value of a degree. With practically everyone being awarded a 2.1 or better [Ok I'm exagerating but you get my jist] it rather devalues what we all did in bygone days [1987 in my case].

I think it may be an idea to email the said Uni's and ask them why your application was rejected. They may not reply but it may provide some useful feedback.

Oh..I thought you meant ALL they had was a 2.2. Agree with Leigh also.

Problem is when 2 candidates have both got a PhD, and similar experience then they start playing the countback game [I suppose].

As an aside I'd be well cheesed off by someone teaching me with just a 2.2 [and thats all?]. They must have had substantial work experience surely?

Very true indeed. A 3rd in the mid 1990's must be woth a 2.1/2 now. I mean 58% of people get a 2.1. How does that work.

'a top professor at my old uni (York) got a third for his degree.'

Yes but that was when 3rd were worth something [1985]. In the present climate, I would imagine the intake of current lecturers will all have something considerably in excess of a 3rd. Not meant to offend anyone, if you have a 3rd.

Quite a few if you red through the old posts. Popular question. Indeed I mention it myself reguarly regarding a pal of mine [Bobo], who recently got accepted with a 2.2 at northern Uni.
