Getting funding for PhD

Where do you think that money comes from [a money tree]? It comes from the countries tax payer. If there was lots of spare cash I'd say give it to UK undergrads, who are getting into desperate debt problems due to no grants.

Wuyeh, can I go to your country and expect the taxpayer to pay for my education? Be assured, I contribute lots to the local economy.

My personal perspective is why is it the job of the EU/UK citizen [as thats what it comes down to] to pay for the education of foreign [non-EU] nationals? There isn't a bottomless pit of money. Would you pay for my education.

No easy answers to that. In fact no answers at all. A great many UK EU students are quite happy with the status quo.

Get a PhD just for the MONEY?

I was told [as a rule] that computing 'headhunters' prefer a top class [under]graduate from a top university as opposed to a PhDer. They may of course be exceptions, but the person who told me ths is pretty clued up on the 'City' scene. Mkae of that what you will.

I have similar problems when I write [too much as opposed to too little]. I have a pal who kindly reads my stuff and goes through with a red pen scribbling crap/shorten/rubbish etc. in various key bits [like 90% of it]. I find this difficult to do for myself due to the emotional attachment. Do you have anyone who could help you with this? Appologies if this was a lame reply btw.

Yep your way too old. In fact life's passed you by completely. Shoot yourself now and get it over with. Trusting you realise where I'm heading with this.

Funding despite having a third

The 'no knockers' bit implies that you are only looking for a positive reply to your query. Regardless, thinking back, I for one was quite surprised you retrospectively obtained funding for your Masters. Arguably, the logic was that it was ‘unallocated monies’ that the Dept. would have had to return to the research council if they didn't give it to you [although I can't remember the circumstances entirely].

I would imagine a great deal depends on how you do in the Masters. If you get a distinction then it enhances your chances. That said, competition for research funding is intense and your dire undergrad degree is bound to impact to some extent. I'm not knocking, but there is little point pretending otherwise.

All you can do is apply and see in the end.
