If you're comitted to going, ask Trish Harrison to email you a copy of the course handbook. I would also attempt to get a grasp of HTA [Ormerod and Shepherd I believe].

In my experience funded projects generally don't need that much of a proposal [they want you to do what THEY want you to do]. You do well to find funding for some idea of you won.

Not entirely sure I would want to date [strange term when you're 40] another PhD student. Last thing I want to do when I stop working is to listen to someones elses PhD woes - have enough of my own. Arguably that why I am in a relationship of mutual convenience.
