I think marketing could be one of 'those areas' where industry expereince is also necessary if you intend to establish an academic career (?) Something to enquire into.

Supportive people [i.e. begging letters?] may not really be the best use of your funding raising time in a cost/benefit sense. Sorry if that sounds negative. Not meant to.

I don't want to put anyone off, after all it's your £3K-£17K, do with it what you will. But in my experience, undertaking multiple Master's level qualifications, unless there is some significant time period involved, makes the person 'look like' they are collecting letters after their name.

A bloody expensive traditon. I often wonder how 'average people' fund the most expensive postgraduate qualifications like MBA's. Lancaster's MBA is I believe £17K. Takes some chasing back that figure.

What exactly do you mea re 'a good idea'? Are you asking for us to come up with a research topic within the subject area? At the risk of being accused of winding people up, isn't that part of actually doing a PhD. Coming up with your own research idea?

Not entirely sure but I think there was a similar post quite recently. I'm relatively sure the answer was you're generally expected to have a masters qualification to gain entry. Someone will know, or you may like to scan back through the forum.
