So true. My sister had a pal who got 4 A's at A level, a 1st Class in Physics from Oxford and a PHd from same. Nasa were very interested in him but he was in CND so that was a non-starter. He now sells life-insurance.

I'm wondering in a general sense when an admissions tutor asks
'what interests you with this studentship' what answers are they looking for. Any important things I must mention?

Well not entirely the case. My old University recently appointed a new lecturer who had the grand total of a BSc degree, and from that University too. I'm told she was 'well liked' as a student in the Department.

I find that statement ridiculous. I'm not being rude [well I probably am actually] but I also find it amazing that someone who has reached the supposed pinnacle of educational achievement can actually say that.

As is often said on here what counts is the viewpoint of the Admissions Tutor. All you can do is put together the best possible application and see how you go.

In mine a distinction was 70% + overall which equates to a 1st. A 2.1 would be 60%+.

I have just read 'Developing Effective Research Proposals' by Keith Punch (2000) as per XJR's advice. Very useful for proposee's. The Findaphd team may want to add this to its list of useful books as this question appears to come up with some frequency. Thank you again XJR.

The big problem I have with some of the above posts is the use of the word 'better'. It implies superiority of some sort which I personally don't care for.

Regardless I think I will scrap my existing research ideas and develop a new proposal instead. The intial working title will be 'PhD students and feelings of superiority'. Do you think I will get funding?
