I use openoffice.org all the times to convert to Pdf. There are also free converters available online. Openoffice is exactly like msword and is free and licensed by free software developers.

Satchi! As someone already written here a few weeks ago that LaTex was coded before Word. I think the latest ms word versions are so powerful that they are as good as any other editors. You can insert/edit bib, write complex mathematical equations etc. So personally I do not see any advantage learning LaTex. Unless somebody can explain here how it is more advantageous then Word. Some people learn it as this is the only format acceptable at certain publishing companies.

I do not how you have reached a conclusion that 'writing this thesis would be a waste of time'. If you do not want something then it is very difficult to even start working on it. I had a part time job recently working at my university shredding 1000s of thesis after scanning and preparing delivery for a recycling company. So In my experience writing thesis and shredding it were two completely different jobs.

SH! If that was without funding then you do not need to worry? There is plenty more fish in the pool. If that was funded then try to get some fb and improve the way you presented your application.

It happened to me many many times. Before an exam I felt totally empty but as soon as the paper was there I could not stop writing:-) In fact got marks as high as 90% after such a horrible feeling.
You are writing a document may be 10 pages long, which is not a Novel piece of work but is a comparison. I believe if you only work on it 1-2 hrs a day writing everything on a blank paper then It will be finished very soon. You should not take it as if it is being written for a Nobel prize, it is just for a PhD.

Regrets are like dumbbells chained together which we all sort of drag in our lives. I have not been able to do so but the best is to get rid of these by learning from mistakes not just remembering em! That will make someone more efficient I suppose...?

That's terrible :$, I thought the complete househusband package came with a free luxury car lots of pocket money and no restrictions/curfew on visiting friends or calling em at home. When I was married, I had an argument about expenses with my ex-partner. We were both working but it was only me bearing all kind of expenses. She called in an old lady who was our neighbor. She settled down the dispute by reminding me about an old English saying 'His money is her money but her money is her money'

I cannot talk about outside world but I learnt from my own department that no one is ready to go on an extra mile to help students, teach or help in research passionately. Most of em just do the bare minimum. I think the trend has changed from 20th century where people were so much passionate and took work as a kind of religion. Cutting long story short, someone would be quite lucky to have a partner like that who will give you even 1/4 of the wages to spend it as you like beyond bills. And that relation should be at an equality level. We all want to stay home, do research, write publications and get splendid lifestyle, holiday to Dubai twice an year and designer clothings..lol
