increased stipend

Quote from EPSRC:

"Doctoral training grants have been introduced by EPSRC in order to provide universities with maximum flexibility in managing their research studentship population. We allocate DTAs as equivalent cash sums to university departments, opening up a wide range of options in the way that funds are used. For example, universities are free to offer stipends above EPSRC's required minimum, or can offer longer support than the usual three years if a project required it..."

I'm not sure FindAPhD team are completely correct here. While money is allocated to a department from a research council according to a formula, it is up to that department on how they spend it, at least in the case of the EPSRC

When will I get any money!!

Dan B - I've had no official confirmation letter - slightly concerning!! Joan/Jean - I find your comments really hurtful - I have set up 2 experiments already for my PhD, and have organised field sampling myself - resources for which have all been paid out my own pocket since I have no lab budget available..so I think I have been rather independant - I could have just sulked in a corner for 3 weeks. My PhD officially started 3 weeks before the academic year begins at my uni..so keep your spiteful comments to yourself.

I am currently making an application for a fully funded PhD with an tax-free stipend of 12.5K. The supervisor has insisted that being a mature student (I am only 35!) more money would be available. Does anyone have examples or experience of negotiating up the value of a stipend because of their circumstances? And do supervisors have the autonomy to adjust allocations they receive from research councils to support preferred candidates? Any thoughts?

I understand the need to document things but I think it’s a good idea to see your supervisor in person as a first attempt to discuss your supervision and hopefully get something sorted. It’s less confrontational and it’s always best (for everyone) to sort these things out amicably if possible. You could follow up your meeting with an e-mail saying 'Thank you for meeting with me today when we discussed my supervisory arrangements and agreed to meet fortnightly from now onwards...' or similar. Then you have a record of the meeting and the agreed supervisory plan.

Reading papers

When will I get any money!!

I have a BBSRC studentship and got a form that the supervisor needs to sign and send back, then they claim to credit your back account as soon as possible thereafter. After that it should be every 3 months automatically. Do you have the studentship confirmation letter from the BBSRC with a contact name ?

Reading papers

Oh- and obviously read the papers of your supervisor especially carefully! Especially the discussion part ...

Ask your supervisor for the pass words of the journals that they subscribe if you would like to read up on other papers (saves you looking through the library). If you need some more information on a side matter look for a review.
Group the papers according to subjects or autors. Make a list of new terms and find a definition for them. Make a list of abbreviations, ie. NER = "Nucleotide Excision Repair".

Reading papers

Make a (short) summary of each paper while you read it. Start with the reviews, and see which papers are referenced there. Look at the quality of the papers, where were they accepted? Rate the importance of Nature/Science papers higher than other papers (and read them more carefully). Write down any questions that arise, for example how does this technique really work?

Firstly e-mail your supervisor (blind copy it 2 urself) - saying that you are unhappy with supervision. No reply - email again. If doesnt work then see hos/groupleader. And then email your supervisor again and copy it to ur hos emphasising that u have emailed twice and nothing has happend - so you are trying for the last time before you do a formal complaint. Its good if u have other students to back u up and evidence that u have tried to get in contact i.ee people have seen u stand round his room.
