Hi,
Is it possible to get admitted to a PhD program without a referee letter from a previous lecturer?

Life after a PhD? Do you need qualifications to lecture
G

Hello, AFAIK the usual route to becoming a lecturer is to do your PhD, then do a couple of Post-doc jobs and aim to publish as much as you can! You usually need a good publication record to be considered for a junior lecturer/lecturer position. Meanwhile, any teaching experience you can get will stand you in good stead. I'm not aware of any particular qualification required for teaching but most Unis will run internal teaching courses for new or less experienced lecturers.

I posted about creative writing. I've already done a degree that was 'chosen' for me, so now I'm going with what I want to do. People might think it's mickey mouse, but there's no point me doing a masters in biophysics just to impress people. After all, I'll probably be paying the money back. Go with what you want to do.

Why don't you try getting your supervisor to appply for it or is there a lab budget for such things? Surely if you can justify the equipment I would have thought the dept would help you buy it. Good luck.

I agree with A nun! Physical scientists probably spend too long in lab!

HELP!! How can I transfer my PhD to another Unviersity?

Hi, thanks for all your advice everyone. I don't want to name any names, but I'm studying Archaeology and was offered a scholarship to go to Italy. I'd happily replace the funding for some proper guidance now though! My current Uni are no help at all, so I think I'll have to change...

Wow - had a look at the blog and I'm really impressed! It's great to see comments from someone who is in a similar position and it seems like you have got it sorted. Like your research tips - my supervisor said the same thing about keeping a research diary although I'm not sure what to write in it! Hopefully I'll be able to come up with some ideas soon.

Research councils

That's because they are elusive! Very few people get them even though NERC say they fund 1100 postgrad students through PhDs mostly and some Masters. They are notoriously hard to get and are funded through the depts so you'll have to get in with whichever dept you want to go to assuming they have some studentships on offer! You could also be up against internal candidates as well so that will make things harder! Good luck!

hmm, from a "real academics" viewpoint, i'd say do what you enjoy and ignore what other people say. I do MRes genetics and i get medicine/physics/maths people telling me thats a soft subject! If you worried what people thought of a subject, you'd never study anything. My only advice would be to look at the graduate destinations of the course, and whether or not it had any external funding. Good employment and external funding give an indication of how high quality the course might be.

Hi Guys, I was wondering whether you can go into University or College lecturing straight after doing a PhD, or do you need to take a particular qualification to do this? If so, what is the qualification called and where can it be attained? Thanks.
