Yes - I helped a research colleague whilst she was having family problems by doing her culture work. It was no problem as I had my own to do anyway. I think as long as the other person appreciates it things work out ok. We both got through!

Hiya, does anybody use blog as their online diary? I am interested in blogging and try to start one. I only tried “Livejournal.com” and “Blog.co.uk”. I found that “Livejournal.com” had spell check functions, but “Blog.co.uk” allows us add emotional-symbols in text. I think many of you have your own blogging experiences. Could anyone give me pieces of suggestions for these different free blog tools? I want to pick an easy and more helpful one soon. Thanks a lot.

Taking Undergrad Tutorials?

Teaching is important if you want to go into academia eventually, but you don't have to do it as part of your course. A lot of PhD students start teaching, but find they don't have the time to do much with their studies anyway.

I totally agree ... you have to do it for the right reasons which involves a lot of hard work and busting a gut! You could be depriving someone who really wants to do research a place!

definitely not!

4 supervisors?

I have 3 supervisors, 1 main one, one secondary one and an external one which seems to work fine for me as they are all experts in different fields. I don't think I'm ever going to get them all together in the same room. I'm just going to go between them as I need to.

PhDs are not the norm in industry but they are in academia now.

Surely a PhD is more essential for a career in academia than industry? To get anywhere nowdays in academia doing research you need a PhD. Some lecturers don't have postgraduate degrees probably because they've been doing it for years and entered the profession when there wasn't such a demand for places and hence are qualified by experience! In industry a PhD can get you into a managerial position faster but you can still work your way to the top like many people.

Meet the supervisor?

Yeah I had a meeting like this with my supervisors. They just wanted to make sure I knew what I was letting myself in for. So it was very informal. In fact it really wasn't like an interview at all apart from a few standard questions.

People get hung up over the reputations of unis as older unis are seen as more prestigious. However this may not be true. It depends on the depts and the lecturers themselves! You may be lucky and get really good ones or unlucky and be based in a competitive dept where it is cut-throat and people are more interested in their research than yours. So you should consider the dept itself and the atmosphere there. Newer unis may be more helpful and dynamic as they are trying to attract more people than older estabished unis.
