CASE awards
G

Go for it CASE awards are very hard to get and well sought after so you should take the opportunity. As you've said the research group is well known and respected you should be fine as you are associated with them. The reputation of your supervisors is also important as academia is a very small world! Don't worry about the uni so much - a PhD is the same wherever you get it from. As long as it's good it doesn't matter where it's from.

Minor changes to thesis

Hello

I had my viva in July and got minor changes. My supervisor is not happy with my changes and says that there is the possibility that my examinors will not pass me. Can it be the case?

opps ... it's meant to say I'm not sure about PhDs! It's worth a try anyway as people change their minds and hedge their bets all the time and positions need to get filled! I would say it happens more often in prestigious unis as they seem to have a very closed network and therefore harder to get into! They also have more people applying so can pick and choose who they want!

You never know who you are up against Joel as if the position has been decided already the interview is just a formality. If the uni decided they have someone in mind for the position already but might have to advertise for whatever reason eg. equality, publicity etc... there's not much anyone can do! If it was a job they would have to go through with the whole interview process to meet equality/employment laws but I'm sure about the position with PhDs!

Taking Undergrad Tutorials?

Yeah it is indeed Dev although the type of teaching varies from dept to dept. We also have to do a short course in teaching before they let us loose on the students which I'm going to sign up for.

Team PhDs

Well, I've been in a similar situation (though final project, not PhD). In my case, I was the "obsessive" one. I was really interested and wanted to know everything, but I was stuck with a person who just didn't bother. So after a while I simply gave up and did some of her work as well (because I had to wait for her to finish before I could continue).

So in my experience, making two students work too close, just isn't a good idea. I like cooperation, but this kind of codependence... It just slows one person down and stresses the other one.

My project is in computing. It's a while since I did it but they just asked questions bout "why I want to do a PhD?", "What do I understand by doing a PhD?", "What sort of skills are useful?"...then alot about my BSc project! Hope this helps.

I actually didn't cover any tutorials, I just did labs and it was about 2 hours a week for a semester. We have to do a short course in teaching and then can sign up for supervising undergrads....so I did it in my 2nd year...missed the course in 1st year!
