You should probably think about a Masters qualification first?

Working during a PhD?

I thought there were rules about NOT working during a PhD - the PhD is supposed to be treated as your job. Maybe I'm wrong - there is no way I could cope with 'another' job, so I haven't really investigated it.

What sort of future do the PhD drop out hold?

Meet the supervisor?
G

I start my PhD in Electrical Engineering this October. I have met with both my two academic supervisors, and my industrial supervisor - and I treated all like a formal job interview. That means dress fairly smart!

All three meetings were fairly rigorous. During the meetings, we discussed my ideas for the project at length. Then they probed into how serious I was about research, and finally my two academic supervisors set me on-the-spot mathematical problems to solve in front of them.

Preparation is key, the more you do, the better equipped you are for the interview!

Good luck!

I'm not in a position to offer you advice on whether to work or not, but if you worked two days, you could earn between around £70-£100.

Meet the supervisor?

Hi, I 've received an offer for a Phd in Mechanical Enginnering and the supervisor would like to meet me.
What do I have to expect from this meeting? What does he want from me? Do I have to consider this like an interview for a job?

4 supervisors?
G

I have three and have found it is a nightmare getting them all together even for half an hour every three months. I think you need to have one or at most two main supervisors, and use the input of the others as/when you need (e.g one of mine has good contacts, one is a well known name). With hindsight, I think it would have helped to define more clearly at the outset the roles of the different supervisors.

Just got a funding offer ...

you could prove it by a bank-statement from either you or someone that is willing to say that just in case of anything they are willing to support you. it needs to have £5000 at least to cover one years living expenses in London. Don't mention anything about relyin on a part time job. they could deny you a visa. try getting a guarantor, they don't have to fund you in practice -just for purposes of getting the visa. you could consider, family and friends or even your bank at home...possibly take a loan...

ya, am going to either manchester or queens belfast. manchester has offered me a teaching job and a scholarship for the last two years. that means i have to pay the tution fee for the first year. the job will take care of living expenses. I am first on waiting list for an award from queens - living expenses and tution fees, but so far haven heard from them. so...maybe manchester.

What a helpful reply Mike!

PhD or Industry?
G

Maybe not entirely relevant, but I worked for 5 years before going back to school for a Ph.D. (am just starting now). My job was aerospace engineering in the US, and what I found is that if you want money or managment positions, then the PhD is unnecessary, but if you want to do research at your company, it's very difficult to convince the company to keep work in house when they can farm out to a PhD, (either a consultant or Univ).

Don't touch it. Sounds like a scam to me.

I'm not so sure...surely the fact that someone (company, university etc) has invested in your education gives a good impression?
