How to prove to the UK embassy that I have enough money to study
G

Hello, I am a non-EU citizen. I got an offer to start PhD programme in the UK. Also I am being offered to cover my tuition fees by the university, but I don't have money for the rest. I think I will find a part-time job when I get to London. But I have to prove to the UK embassy that I have enough money to live in the UK without working. How can I do it? If a person from another country can sponsor me, what kind of prove should I get from him?

Sweetchic, Thank you for your support and answer. Although I am sure I will be able to get a job if was in London, I am not sure how I can prove it now to the UK consulate to get a student visa. What is happening with you? Are you starting a PhD programme this year?

PhD grading

PhDs are totally different to taught courses. I fear that if your only motivation is to gain the Dr title and you do not intend to 'bust a gut' you are in for a big shock! PhDs are not (normally) graded, it's a simple case of passing or failing, however, the opinion of your supervisor (in the form of a reference) will be important in securing your first post-doc position. It is certainly possible to enjoy your time as a post-graduate but gaining a PhD requires a LOT of hard work and dedication. Good luck!

In your opinion, does an Industrial CASE award look better on your CV than if you have funded yourself?

PhD in Tourism
G

Hi,

Basically, I finished my BSc (hons) in Tourism Management 2 years ago, unfortunately with a 2:2, but I’ve been working for Thomas Cook for over 5 years, and I’ve been told +5 years work experience can be taken in lieu of a 2:1.

I’m looking to do a PhD by distance learning, so I can remain in Thomas Cook.

1) What institutions run distance learning PhD’s in Tourism?
2) Is it possible to obtain part-funding/full-funding for PhD’s by distance learning in the area of Tourism?

Kelly.

it might be struggle this year, but next year you can apply for the ORS and other scholarships to take care of expenses. all the best!

Congratulations!! 20 hours a week outside London is usually enough to live comfortably, but transport to and from uni in London can be up to £16 a week. if you don go to uni everyday it will be less tho. you can live in the outskirts of London where its cheaper. i'd say start your phd and then bring some emergency money at least £1000. that will take care of living expenses for two months and an airticket just in case. jobs are readily available in London.

How many hours shoud I work per week?
G

You should aim to work full-time hours (about 37 per week) and you probably won't need to do much more than this in your first year so can keep your weekends free. Unfortunately, you may well have to put in extra hours as your project progresses. You certainly need some time-out though, as you say too much work is detrimental to your health and social life!!

hiring a writer

Of course everyone should get their thesis proof-read (certainly by supervisors and also by other people less involved in your work, they are more likely to spot any confusing statements). However, there is a massive difference between getting someone to spot your typos and bad grammar and paying someone to write your thesis.

tutoring

Your supervisor(s) should be acting as your 'private tutor(s)'. Is there a problem with your supervision?
