PhD Project Proposal
G

Hi all

I would like to know which is the suggested structure for a PhD Project proposal (the topic would be related to the Economic field), since I must write such document in order to apply for a PhD programme. Please help since I am a foreign student and in my home country we don´t have such requirements, so I don´t know what should be the starting point. Thank you very much

German Doktorat and American PhD
G

Hi,
I am about to complete a Doctorate degree in business administration from a German university. I also have a Fulbright scholarship and want to pursue a PhD in Economics next year. Does anyone know if it would be a problem in the US to start a PhD AFTER having completed a "Doktorat" in Germany? Anyone familiar with the German system will know that a German Doktor is not comparable with a PhD; Do any of you have experience with this? Do you know what American Grad Schools will think about my application?
Thanks for you help guys!
Best,
Stefan

NI, tax and social security benefits
G

You can claim benefits if you want, but you'll go to jail for fraud for a short spell if they catch you:) I don't think that you pay NI, which isnt much anyway. You certainly don't pay any income tax or council tax because as a student you are exempt from taxation. Qualifying years for what?

How many hours shoud I work per week?
G

Some people say I should work at weekends whilst doing my chemistry PhD. That's what I did as an undergrad, I'm not gonna do it anymore, coz you end up going bonkers and your health and work suffers. I don't think that a PhD is worth being miserable over. I think too much study makes Jack a dull boy??????????

Dont listen to people like Pep, althogh well intentioned, in life u must stick up for yourself and stand up against anyone who treats you badly. If your boss uses words that hurt you then this is legally known and bullying and harassment. The threat of a formal complaint to the police will stop him/her dead in their tracks. Don't let your emotions get to you. Take up a sport that involves vigorous exercise. You'll soon find you can cope much better with everything. Don't allow others to control your emotions.

hiring a writer

A copy editor is clearly of benefit to anyone submitting a PhD thesis. I beleive that it is indeed ethical to use such a facility. A copy editor I believe, will only correct structure and grammatical errors. I have read this in the book " How to get a PhD" which slags off people who dont know about this resource. Besides, nooone can ever find out that u used a copy editor anyways, hence from either viewpoint the argument of ethics is rather weak and irrelevant anyway.

I'm so tired ...

Take up martial arts. Maybe your body needs some intense exercise and som ebalance in your life. That's not so easy when you're wrting a thesis, however I've been there and you need balance or else you start going backwards instead of forwards.

I am a PhD student in my third year in the field of health policy/human resource. How can I get a private tutor to help me?

PhD grading
G

Are PhDs graded? I got a first at undergraduate level but would like to breeze through my PhD with minimum fuss, being a whizz at research. I must admit that I am only doing it for the prestigious title of'Dr' and want to enjoy my time as a postgraduate, not bust a gut. I mean, nobody can take away the my first degree, can they? Is it possible to get a 'Douglas Hurd' in the PhD world? Thanksxxx

Just got a funding offer ...
G

The university I got an offer from (but deferred it till next year because didn't get funding) got back to me offering to pay my fees if I start this October. I'm excitied and confused. I don't have money to cover living expenses. I have to get a job. But will 20 hours/week be enough to live on in London? I am not allowed to work more because am a foreigner. I am abroad now, and not sure if it is possible to get a job while being outside the UK. Any similar cases? Any suggestions?

MSc without an undergraduate degree
G

I am applying to do a MSc in Public Service Management having worked in central government for 5 years; however, I do not have an undergraduate degree. One university has accepted me based on my work experience but the other (which I'd rather attend) has a much better reputation and has asked to some written work. In all honesty, do you think it is possible to go straight to a Masters without having a first degree? If no, do I do the undergraduate or take a PG Dip as an entry route?
