the way i see it, it's probably not advisable to begin a doctorate unless you are pretty sure you are financially prepared for it. i myself waited seven years to apply for a PhD until I'd saved enough. (unconditionally accepted and just begun. YAY! ... oh sh*t!)

Also, it very much depends on your project. It's not all about how hard you work, sometimes there are things that are out of your control. In a biomedical field, for example, it may take 2-3 years before you have collected enough samples or you might have to wait for a clinical trial to finish before the data can be unblinded etc. It can take a year or more to perfect an assay, the list is endless! ;o)

Not likely as you will be paying 1 year fewer fees.

i know someone who stopped after 5 years... out of money, 6 months away from the phd defense...

PhD or Industry?
G

Helen, I was in the same situation and I went for the industry... making a good living now, so no regrets... thinking about it, phd would be great, but now i am thinking mba... also depends on if you need a phd to find respect where you'll work... lots of items to think about... a friend of mine did her phd in 10 years!!! hope you like research... don't reject the phd offer until you secure a job you like!

Your departments should send you loads of info. With any uni, it's a case of finding your own way around a lot of the time!

too expensive!!!

You pay what it actually costs to educate someone, but we get subsidised by the government.

How come UK tuition fees are more than double if you are an international student? Is seems unfair...
