Employers' view on MPhil
G

Hello.

I was given the impression before I took my current job that a PhD would be part of the package. I have now been told that I will not have the time to do it in addition to my other duties. Having expressed that I would still quite like to pursue it I have been reluctanly offered an MSc (I already hold a MEng) or an MPhil. If after I have completed the MPhil, I find that I do not have time to continue to PhD will it be viewed by industry and academia as a 'failed PhD'?

Thanks.

I agree stw, I have noticed this problem on many occassions. It is quite disappointing when you find out that the projects you wanted are full.

Out-of Date Project Adverts

Has anybody else noticed the vast number of PhD projects that are advertised on this website that are very out-of date. I know this to be true as I have enquired about a load, only to get a prompt response stating that the position was filled some time ago. I find this very demoralising and don't feel that this website is showing competance to be trusted.

Power and hypocrisy in higher education

Looks interesting - I'll have a read. I've been struggling to come to terms with academia and my place in it, trying to 'figure it out'. This might help.

SHOW THE INITIATIVE REQUIRED OF A PROSPECTIVE PHD STUDENT AND FIND ONE YOURSELF. PROJECTS ARE VERY COMPETITIVE, SO YOU WILL NEED TO PUT IN GOOD APPLICATIONS. SIMPLY ASKING THE FORUM FOR ONE WILL GET YOU ABSOLUTELY NO-WHERE!!!!!

i have a question
G

Doctrate in Philosophy - PhD
usually 3 years in the UK. u r admitted to an M.Phil (masters of Philosophy) or the 1st year and then subject to performance enrolled to continue and complete ur PhD over the next 2-3 years. full - time research. represents highest academic qualification/merit.

Masters in Business adminstration - MBA
different things u can work on - HR, finance, etc etc. im vauge on this topic.
is this what u asked for btw?:)

transfer to the UK university
G

As to the administration -- the head of my department in Italy is the former roomate of my supervisor from their university times, so I guess complaining to him won't do me any good.
The reason why I asked about the transfer is because there are quite a few Italian people who do their second PhD in the UK. I could always go for this option (the difference is that this will be my first one), but wouldn't like to loose 2 years (minimal registration)

Thanks Ann and Mia
The problem with my supervisor is that he's changed his research interests and simply is not interested in what I'm doing.

Thesis sex!

The hard ones can be more difficult owing to the sharp corners but they don't bend in the middle like the soft ones do. I guess it's a toss-up between pain and pleasure perhaps?

Why am I even posting on this thread?!

I'm so tired ...

How about eating it? Tasty with some garlic or drizzled in chocolate sauce?
