Mr A-team ..PS as in Problem Solving pickley sandwiches ..although heed..caution as OD -ing on PS's will cause immense BDDBO's [Bottom Death-Defying Blow Outs]especially if mixd with BB's [Baked Beans] the night previously. Oh yes I'm in the lab already in my 1st month but I have done this before as a job so it's no big deal to me! I'm glad actually so I have a chance to try to finish on time as I have so much lab work to do it's unreal! It was a weird transition from working to be a student as I had all this "free" time while waiting for equipment to arrive! I'm glad I'm in the lab as it feels like I'm actually doing something and getting results!

I've heard from other people that induction weeks are good as everyone gets to know each other which is a great ice - breaker! Just hope there is one when people start in Oct but I doubt it!

Cool wish I had one when I started! I started in August - slap bang in the middle of the summer and it was so boring and the place was dead (and still is!) Hardly anyone is around especially no one to go to lunch with! Just can't wait until the start of term when there will be new students around!!

I do agree with David but I think with a 3rd it would be very hard! With a 2:2 and MSc it is hard enough as it is very competitive! I do think it is unfair that they just look at what you got and it seems to stay with you so you must do lots to show you are keen on subject you want to do! Volunteering is a good way to show this. Taking a break is a good idea to work out what you want to do!

Oh and hope your partner has lots of money to support them as kids can be very expensive! Can you support them on a PhD studentship or any a post doc position is another matter worth considering!

Depends if you want to get married and settle down and have lots of kids! Only you can answer that!!

You will be lucky if you can get people to have lunch the same time as you and socialise! Try this on new students rather existing ones who are set in their ways and eat lunch in the postgrad room in front of their computers!!

just try then worry about what they'll say later...after you've send in your application. usually the last degree you've done is usually the one that is used as a measure of your ability. don't worry about the 2.2 too much.

I was in the same position, you have to see which one is the best for you career wise. Money is a good point. Do you want to be someone who wants to publish etc make a name for yourself in your field - then the enthusiastic one is the one to go for. If you want to get on with your phd and then get out then maybe the kind one is the one for you. Youve got to bear in mind that within a big group...there is a lot of org politics that goes on.....

get a lot of recent articles on the research area you want to research on. most will have a literature review. that should give you an idea on whether what you are writing on has been done before and probably an idea of what hasn't been done. most articles conclude by mentioning areas for future development. as reena has said, usually, the originality is in the approach taken rather than in the novelity of the overall proposal.
