Same Research as someone else
G

you should research your area well before you write your proposal. There will be loads of people researching the same topic, but its the approach you use and your focus on it that will be new. You have to show how your work will add to the debate.

I'm so tired ...

well thanks for all the advice guys. Have reduced hours to quality 10 a day, and taking breaks and walks in between. Still hate thesis though and want to torture it slowly

for those doing lab work

I'm starting a PhD in engineering and will spend all of my time reading and using computers. I didn't realise that much lab work went on.

Same Research as someone else

Hi, I am beginning to write my research proposal, I was wondering if there is any way of finding out if someone somewhere is doing the same topic, I don't want mine to be the same because I know it has to be something new and novel. Or will the research council I apply to tell me?
Thanks!

Entry Requirement
G

Hi all, I want to apply for a PhD at Kings College London, their entry requiremnet is a 2:1 degree.
I have a 2:2, and also a Msc by Research. I know its a reputed colllege.
Do i have a chance to get in with my qualifications? After all they do say a MSc knocks up your degree abit!

Thanks!!

FAO
G

Could be. I am not familiar with this that's why I asked. I don't think it is that important but I was just curious.

FAO
G

Could it possibly mean 'for attention of' which is the only meaning of FAO that I'm familiar with?

all in a muddle :-(
G

Doing a PhD is really just a difficult process. I have accepted this and decided to try and get on with it. But at points, I get quite depressed and feel terribly unhappy about this long process. I really just want to finish and move on with my life. I've tried lifestyle changes, breaks etc. Anty suggestions from anyone in a similar position?

student loan
G

Nope and chances are you won't qualify for a career development loan (these tend to be reserved for professional qualifications - I couldn't get one for my Masters). Best thing to do is go into your bank and ask them what they can do for you - I took out a graduate loan for my MSc and the interest is much less than the CDL (although there was less of a break in paying it back)

Southampton University

You saying I'm mad???!!!
Southampton itself is a dive - I wouldn't stay here if I had a choice! But the uni is good and they've made lots of improvements recently.
