You can build on the MSc.

I am completing postgraduate diploma and could/should do the dissertation now to get the MSc. Meanwhile I have been told I could directly apply for a PHd (I have also several years of job experience) Any advice ?

I guess there are many reason why one would opt for a PhD. I myself done my MSc and feel that I would be worth more when I join the industry now and have three (or four) years of work experience. There is always the possibility to continue for a PhD when the need arises. And yes Jamie, the evil individuals in academia are gone for me, but they are replaced by evil supervisors in industry ;)

Vicky, i came for interview at a different time to most of the other students (couldnt get the time off work!!). Im heading up to Potters Bar at the weekend to sort out some digs.

Reena - I'm in the same boat, doing my PhD in the same dept as my undergrad an am worried I might let them down. Guess we'll jsut have to see how things go

I have a taught soc sci Masters degree (not MRes). Would I still qualify for ESRC '3' funding or do you need a research postgrad qualification?

yeh i am still scared. I am sure u'll all be fine. I'm goin back to the dept i did undergrad in, so I am scared that I will not do as well as they expect me to. But they;ve employed me over the summer and its all stuff to do with the phd so hopefully it should be ok ... agrhhhhhhhhhhh

Depends on the uni and subject. Usually 80,000-100,000 for soc sci.
