Can anyone confirm whether as a PhD student you can take out a student loan. I already have a loan from previous undergraduate study.

I'm just starting my third year of a geography BA degree. No ones really explained what masters are. I want to do something in international development eventually. Is it necessary to take a masters in development studies?

It's unlikly (but not impossible) that you will find a PhD position that will offer this... if your supervisor (not the university) has a collaboration with a lab in one America/Asia then ask during the interview if this will be possible.

I've been in Brighton for two years now. Nice city, but half of my income goes on rent and transportation.

If you are doing an MRes then it increases your chances as funding is often 2.1 or 2.2+masters minimum. Usually though it is the universities who make the offers, not the funding bodies directly if you were going through that route(BBSRC or EPSRC most likely in your case). If you're doing well on your MRes then it will be in your favour. Also be prepared to explain why you got a 2.2 but that you turned it around. But don't let it put you off, go for it !

Yes, don't worry! Try to write up as much as you can as you go along though (even if you decide it's not good enough in a year or so at least you have a draft to work from). Anyway, plenty of time before you have to fret about thesis submission, just have fun and enjoy your first few weeks! All the best :o)
