First contact - help!

Thanks Joey! I wanted to use two lettes - a short actual message and than a longer letter as an attachment, but perhaps it's better to make it just one like you said.

I would just send a CV like you have mentioned and a single letter of application (probably about 1 A4 sheet), saying who you are, why you want to work there and why they should take you on.

Good luck!

MSc - thesis
G

Well I'm doing a MSc dissertation, in statistics, at the mo. And my supervisor proudly boasted none of his students has ever got less than 62 and the guy was "lazy without any intellect". So yeah it's possible, but then my supervisor is hardly eager in his endeavour... And a tip from him was a 'good showing of having read the relevant literature' i.e. reference all you can !

Then I have put a short CV, a list of courses I have attended and a short "letter" where I speak about what I want do in the future etc.
Is this too much or too little? It is a good lab, so I really want them to see how much I'd like to go there, and how it would fit exactly with my plans.

I am writing to a lab in UK to ask if I can volunteer there, but am having troubles with writing as want to make good first impression. How much personal detail should I include? Right now a have a short letter just saying who I am, how interesting their work is and can I join them.

I'm so tired ...

Hang on in there - it will soon be over!!! Book a holiday for when you have finished to avoid post PhD blues. Good luck

I'm so tired ...

(1) Drink lots of water - dehydration makes you tired (2) look away from the computer screen every so often - look at something in the distance. This reduces eye strain/headaches/stress = tireness (3) Take regular breaks - don't wait until you can't do anymore -timetable a ten minute break every 1-2hours (4)Make sure you are sleeping well - a few hours quality sleep is better than a restless 8 hours - unwind before bed - write down anything that is playing on your mind and may keep you awake (5) you need physical exercise as well as mental exercise to help you sleep (6) avoid stimulants - this just produces a 'rollercoaster' that will drain you.

software help qualitative data?
G

P.s. if you're rich enough you can always get someone to do the transcribing for you, but they'll probably make loads of mistakes and potentially distort the research simply because they werent there at the time of data collection
