Flirting
G

Hi Anon, I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but I think you should try to be less flirty. Do you want to be known as the intelligent, professional PhD student or the flirty one? Do you want your ideas to be taken seriously?

A girl in the neighbour lab always wore very fancy clothes with a lot of cleavage etc. Of course her looks were the first thing people noticed about her and not her work.

Still, if you feel it would be against your personality to be 'prim and proper', then don't. Just keep in mind, that it may be to your disadvantage professionally. Wishing you all the best.

MSc - thesis
G

Im currently doing an MSc in finance in ireland. All done except the thesis which is due in 1 wk. All i have left is my analysis. Since ye are all very clued in is it fair to say that the results and conclusion write up are the most important aspect. though i reckon this is a simpletons paper i wouldnt have had time 2 do more as coursework throughout the yr was very intensive.
Is it difficult to get a b grade as i need this to maintain a 2.1?
Any thoughts, ideas, anecdotes, etc would be welcome?

italiani..ci siete?
G

Worth it?

Just a thing: I studied in Italy and now I am going to relocate in Uk to do a PhD. I worked for some years before deciding for a PhD and the best scientist I met (at work or at internatinal meeting etc...), all of them I met, in a way or in another, spent some years in studying in Uk. We can look at this also reading the cv of people speaking in any internation meeting on Nanotech or similar.

Worth it?
G

For me its definately worth it. Many + points to doing a PhD:
1. Hopefully accomplish a life long ambition
2. Be regarded as a leading expert in a particular field
3. Student life for another 3 yrs!!!!!!!!

I spent time during my undergrad degree studying in germany, and in my opinion the students there were no "better" than those in the UK. If anything, their theoretical knowledge was somewhat lacking - maybe cos teaching is spread over so many years. Main difference i noticed though was they do get a more practical experience, and have to do a compulsory research project for a year full time once they finish their degree before moving on to PhD.Like DanB, I'd be interested to know what academics think about this too though?!
