Has she tried for 1+3 funding from any of the research councils? If she can argue that her course is in some way vocational (I managed to get a CDL for an MSc in Public Policy) she'll be eligible, but unfortunately repayments start a couple of months after the end of the course :(

I've been awarded a conditional PhD studentship from Sheffield if I 'successfully complete' my masters. I expect any concrete stipulation will be by percentage, as masters grades vary - for example, UCL doesn't even 'do' merits - it's either a distinction or pass (or a fail). Best thing to do would be to ask the uni concerned.

You have a big problem. Even if you are helped to get one, I am afraid you might fall out with the lady along the way because you might not be able to manage her well!
